Does anyone have a 72" woods on there famrall A?
I know the woods L59 mower will work good on the A my dad has one. But I want to know if I put a 72" woods on my A will it rob it of to much power
like the difference from a 42" and a 60" on the Cub?
I just don't want to waste my time. I have a 60" on its way and I can get the 72 deck for $100.00
what do you think?

Depends on your mowing area but you have plenty of power to run the 6ft.

Have cub with 60" seems like a little hard work. Have A with 60" piece of cake.

Chad: The down side I see with the 72" mower is uneven ground. Fine if your ground is perfectly level and flat. I notice a couple of 72" mowers very near me, and you can see where they have been scalping the sod. I have a 60" and have a few rough areas. Very noticable difference how bad the extra 12" causes this. When that starts happening the mower soon gets dull, and dull mowers take a lot of extra power.

I notice this if I strike sod with my mower and take the sharp edge off, doesn't seem to bother SA very much on power, but you soon notice the belt and pullies warm up. While the blades are nice and sharp, I hardly notice the belt and pulley heat. Also, when blades are sharp, I can head into heavy grass a foot high.

I use a 72" woods finish mower on the back of an IH 140 without problem. Been using it for almost 25 yrs now.

Started out as a RM 500 with 60" cut till the deck rusted out. Made a 72" deck out of 304 SSt, galvanized the gear box, and made the belt/pulley cover plates out of 316 SSt. Used the original spindals/pulleys with RM 660 blades to get 72" width. Course my blade tip speed is a little higher than stock, but cuts great in 2nd gear (& 3rd) with the 140's horse power in the low 20's. Oh, and I haven't had any rust problems for the last 15 yrs or so.

Afternoon Chad, I think thats a bit much to ask of the A. Rule of thumb is 5 hp for every 1 ft of cut. So you would need a minumum of 25 to 30 hp for that mower. The A and Super A work great with a 5ft cut, but 6 ft would only work if on a flat with grass thats not too high IMO.

Yes I don't want to get into the same problems I had with the cubs! I love my cubs but little under power for the 5' woods if the grass isn't kept up!
