4 of the grease zerks on my 300u's 2pt fasthitch dont take grease, they are rusted/plugged up. It's a shame as the right side part that goes to the drawbar is kinda sloppy. The rockshaft has no play in it tho. The left side leveling device was replaced with a turnbuckle, but the threaded tube has been long replaced with a standard pipe and the "eyebolts" of the turnbuckle just have holes drilled through them and 5/16" bolts used to secure them to the pipe, so far they havent broke, haha. I cant find a turnbuckle to replace it, as none have 1" hollowballs on them from tsc, do they sell them elsewhere? Originally it had some sort of leveling device, but the chances of me find that are not very good.
Anyways, to the point of my post, I need to replace the grease zerks. I got the old pressed in ones out. Just put a pair of vice grips on them and used a crowbar and popped them out, got all the gunk dug out and aired them out. Now here's the thing, dad brought me home some new zerks from work, but I cant seem to find any taps for them. Dad says they might be NPT. Can anyone confirm this? They are small little buggies for NPT. Does case still sell the press in ones? ( i wont be going to the closer dealer anymore, as their return policy just ticked me off, 40% restocking fee my butt, the other on is about 5 min further with no restocking fee, except on special orders its 15% which is reasonable).

I'm gonna stop by ace tomorrow and see if they have any and if it says what size thread they are.

Sometime try a little heat, then hit 'em with the grease gun before they cool off. Works for me. Don't use excessive heat, just a little.

Although it wasn't your original question, suprised nobody's mentioned trying one of those syringe-like tools that are supposed to clear up grease zerks that wont take grease. Fill the tool with penetrating oil, put it on the zerk, and hit it with a hammer and it's supposed to unclog the zerk so it'll take grease again....

Dont know, maybe they don't work....I have one, bought it at our local parts store, but haven't tried it yet.

You can get just about any style grease fitting made, including drive-in ones, from McMaster-Carr. Check out their catalog or on-line, mcmaster.com. They'll sell to anyone with a credit card. They're fast too.

I had to replace about 10 of the zerks in my SA and tried to find some of the drive in ones but couldnt. I did find some at Case but they were in metric and wouldnt work. Ended up getting an assortment at Tractor Supply and tapped them and it worked fine. In fact I ended up taking some good drive in ones out where I would have matching zerks in each side.

Broke one tap off, boy was that fun getting it out.

Taps also work good getting rust out of the old holes like in the stud bolt holes.

way back when the standard for grease zerks was 1/8" npt. newer things are usually the 1/4" bolt thread.

Get yourself an assortment. Dad got his at the local Massey Ferguson dealer of all places probably close to 20 years ago for maybe $20. It's still coming in handy.

Harbor Freight has a similar assortment.

Some are drive-in, some are NPT, and some are straight thread. The drive-in ones are the easiest to install; just use a 1/4" socket that fits over the nipple, and an extension, as a driving tool. Tap in with a small hammer...

I use the the 1/4-28 as Harold described. You can get them in 90 degree elbows or straight. You need to use a No3 tap drill or a drill close to .213". Hal

I just bought a tap for that. I'm adding a couple of zerks to an implement.
I took one of the zerks to Carquest and Eddie matched it to 1/8" 27-NPT. Its package says to use a 5/16 drill bit. I've think I've seen another, smaller size zerk though, you might want to take one along to have it matched.
Good luck, Wm
