The 460 I looked at has 1891 hrs on it. Had a loader but was told it was a light duty loader. TA seems strong but I have to hold it back(seems as if linkage is out of adjustment. has a 2 pt, pto turns when shifted into gear. all gears are quiet when used, shifts very easy, good clutch. Hydraulic problems??!! 2 pt is very slow to lift and very slowly drops when not used. there appears to be a check valve block behind the seat with no hoses going to it. Is that a big problem? Are the tie rods easy to get new? the steering is out of tow and the tie rods have slight uneqaul bends in them along with lots of fresh pipe wrench teeth marks. gas guage does not work, and does not appear to be charging the battery. Called 20 minutes before I got there so there was no time to butter it up. had to pull start it but fired very quickly. No smoke at all Is it worth $4000.00? 70% rubber all the way around but the fronts wont last long unless the tie rods are fixed. Fenders not very good-rusting severly at the bottom. missing both name plates and one panel where the name plate goes. hood is straight it has exhaust out the top. other sheet metal has dents but ok. I want a working tractor that I can eventually call my first restore project. What are the 3 pt adapters I have all 3 pt equip. now and would like to use it all. I want to buy this tractor but will it be a money pit???

TIA

Butch

March 24 th NE IA 460 with loader and heat houser, decent rubber brought $4,100.00. The starter would not release unless it run up to full throttle. I put quite a few hrs on it before the sale. Wide front, and a pretty decent loader, paint was pretty good also. I'm not a big fan of the 460s. Every one I have ever been around was very cold blooded, perhaps not properly adjusted carbs? You always needed one hand on the choke untill you put it in the shed in the evening. The first hr every time the govenor lunges or you use the hydrolics you had to choke it. The owner said it was cheap on fuel.

A friend just purchased a 560 utility, pretty rough paint, poor rubber, and alot of hydrolic oil drips. The loader is ok, but far from perfect. $4,500.00.

Depends on how bad you want it. $2500 seems fair. I paid $2750 for a 460 Hi Utility 3 years ago, only 5-600 made. Bates Corp and others have tie rod ends, I don't about the rods themselves. The check valve block mounts on the battery box behind the seat and connects to the hyd cylinder for the fast hitch. Change the filter as stated below, your fluid is probably half water, drain, refill, drain again and refill at a minimum. I completely disassembled and cleaned the hyd system on mine, not sure I want to do that again. The power steering cylinder was pitted and needed a sleeve made. Generator/voltage regulator are easily repaired. I will have a small fortune in mine when it is done, but essentially everything has been rebuilt except the TA and transmission. BUT, as a first tractor restoration, if you want to do a complete job, I cannot recommend the 460 -- start with something simpler, such as a letter series.

Typo on the 4000 He is asking $3000. Would a 2500 offer be offensive. It is not rough but it has it's working clothes on. The tach looks old and weathered like the rest of the tractor, not that thatmeans anything. What do the 3 pt adapters look like?

If you go back and look at the old posts you will find several comments on how 460U tractors bring quite a bit more than rowcrops. Fans of the rowcrop don't seem to agree (I have both) but they didn't make a lot of them and they appeal to alot of people who hobby farm. I have trouble climbing up the back of the row crop and like the lower utility. From what I have read, the power assist steering was somewhat problematic, but mine works fine. You can find a picture of the 3 point adapters on ebay. they are for sale there all the time. I don;t think 3,000 is out of line, but you can try to offer 2500. The one I bought sounds alot rougher than yours.

I agree that it should bring more than a rowcrop in similar condition.

Seems like an awful lot, but I must admit that I don't like them. I think I could produce a warranty repair ticket for ours when it was about a year old, and it had some of the trouble you describe as well as a burnt valve and transmission trouble. Was not a real good tractor, it was purchased to be a step up from our 450, and was a serious disappointment. Less than 50 hrs. per year? I will go way out on a limb and guess that the tach has been replaced. The steering was not real rugged on them, it would seem that loader use probably didn't help any. As far as real usable power, you could end up missing your Super M.

Oh yeah, the 3 point adapters work OK, but they are definitely are real pain in the rear. Make sure you get the ones that angle upwards or you won't be able to lift your equipment very high. People are quite proud of these as well so don't expect these to be cheap either. Probably well over $100 for the pair.

I certainly haven't priced one recently but my first gut feel is that $4000 is pretty pricey considering the condition you described. I think the utility owners are often quite proud of their machines, since the low profile is often coveted. One comparison, we sold a 560 diesel which I suspect is much more of a tractor a number of years back for $2500 and it really had nothing wrong with it all other than the normal problem these things never start when it is cold. One reason to buy the gas. I noted your earlier post you said the price was $3000. That seems closer to what I think it might be worth. I would certainly ask lots of questions and check lots of resources on pricing before I spent four grand on what you described. On the other hand, the loader does increase the value depending on it's condition.
