O.T. magneto question (BMW)

I'm just finishing up reassembling a friend's '62 BMW R50. Once we started it, we couldn't shut it off, i.e. pulling the key out didn't help.

It appears that the control terminal on the mag is grounded all the time, even with no wire attached. I have absolutely no experience with magnetos. Any ideas ( or theories) what could be wrong with this thing ?

Thanks

Greg

On a typical magneto, the "kill" terminal SEEMS to be grounded all the time, 'cause the primary of it's coil has a resistance of typically well under 20 Ohms, and the primary of the coil is connected from the "kill" terminal to ground.

If the engine has stopped at a position where the points are CLOSED, the closed points create a dead short from the "kill" terminal to ground.

The resistance is zero even with the points open.

ZERO, or 6 to 12 Ohms?

If the engine RUNS, and the stud shows a dead short with the points "open", it mush be shorted to ground AND somehow disconnected internally from the points/condensor/coil.
