Clutch for F12

I am restoring my grandfather's 1936 F12 Farmall. Clutch will not disengage; I have tried putting in a used pressure plate and clutch on an 8" flywheel. I have also tried a 9" flywheel and pressure plate. There seems to be too much travel between the through out bearing and the pressure plate. The through out bearing appears to be fully engaged but yet the clutch will not release. I have made a temporary clutch linkage to make sure the clutch is fully engaged; still will not release.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Did you remember to remove the three bolts that release the tension on the pressure plate? If not, that will cause too much distance between release fingers and throw-out bearing and not allow clutch to work. Hope this is all that"s wrong.

First of all your clutch pedal free travel should not be more than 3/4". A couple of things to check. The distance between the three "fingers" to the throughout bearing should not be more than 5/16". This can be adjusted by rotating the adjustment nuts in the correct direction. There are three of them. They are held in place by the end of a spring. These springs prevent the nuts from rotating and getting out of adjustment. After the inspection cover is removed from the bottom of the the flywheel housing, you can reach in with a pair of pliers and rotate them. Of course, you would have to rotate the engine with the hand crank to reach all three of them. Next, I would look at the splines on the clutch shaft and the clutch plate. If they are excessivley worn, they can bind up. Next make sure the bearing release sleeve is lubricated. A thin layer of grease is all that is needed as there is no grease zert. Hope this helps.
