I was looking at an old polaroid picture my father took of the Super A before my cousin took it off to paint (back 20 years ago) and noticed it had an oval plate on the starter. I cant make out what is says but it is silver looking, about three inches long. I see the two holes on the side of the starter where it (the rivits) went but thats all I have to go on.

Any info on what the plate might have said?

Re: Plate On Side Of Starter - Update in reply to SuperA-Tx, 04-23-2007 14:15:59
On a Super A delco remy starter plate.

Starter serial number 1107067 was used on Super A's starting with tractor serial number 25001 to 305645.

Starter serial number 1107093 was used on tractor serial number 305646 and up.

The above starter serial number was on the starter plate along with the date codes described below.

First digit is year. Second digit is month in letter code. Third is day of month.

Example: 1107067 8G18

Letter code started with A and contunued thru M. No I(eye) was used.

 Possible Anti-Theft Idea in reply to SuperA-Tx, 04-23-2007 14:15:59

Mine is riveted on and absolutely illegible.

If I ever replace it, I’m thinking of stamping the new plate with a unique code (maybe my initials and year of birth backwards). Then if the tractor is ever stolen, the cops can identify it even after the thief removes or replaces the tractor serial number plate. Of course, it would make it interesting if someone ever had to cross-reference the part number to replace the starter…

All the Delco starters and generators had a tag similar to those pictured. 6-volt were black, 12-volt red. The number stamped into the center area is the Delco part number of the unit. Also stamped (I think after the part number) is a date code. I have forgotten how to decode, but you can find it on the web.

For a Super A starter, I have the numbers:
1107067 48-53
1107021 48-53
1107093 52-54

A lot of rebuilders rip the tags off and replace them with their own (usually paper) tags with their numbers, usually something like S-14. That way, they can treat several different original parts as all the same and avoid customer confusion.

Thanks Bob,

Where can I get one?

Were they attached with pop rivits or screws or some other way?

Hugh, yea, you can relax now. I did go check on the 140's and neigher one of ours had that plate on there. Could see where they use to be tho so some "plate thief" must be stealing them.

The photo is from someone's ebay auction.

They are held on with a sort of "threaded rivet" that can be hammered into place in into the holes in the starter's "BELLY"..

Check out the site below:

Randy: Are you saying there was a Texas starter plate thief. lol I'm not 100% certain the plate is on my 140. I do remember now the strip through the middle was a stamped model number. If you want the one for SA, I can get it for you providing SA did not have more than one number during the 6 years of production. Mine is 53.

Bob: That's it, the middle one of course, nothing about 12 volts on those Super A. There you go Randy, I take it I am excused from going to my shop, and yes your 140 will have one.

Randy: Those are still on my starters, I forget everything on there but there is a part or model number. I can go and look if you wish. I know that number is different on my SA and 130, however I can switch the starters and they work just as well.

Hugh,

Sometime when your out there just jot down what one of them has on there and drop me an email.

Maybe someone could take a picture of one?

Heck, I should go look at out 140's and see if there is a plate on one of them. I dont recall one but I never really looked either.

I may take the info to a sign guy and have a decal made. Wont be the same as the original plate but it will look OK I guess. Dont guess anyone makes a replacement? Nah, probly not.

It May Not be an Exact Replica... in reply to SuperA-Tx, 04-23-2007 15:24:04
...but if you're willing to spend the money, you may be able find a shop locally that will make embossed aluminium tags. They are still used for all sorts of things.

There is a shop in Austin, Texas that does it, and I have contacted them about having some made up for a radio-telegraph transmitter I am building from a 1941 design. I'd probably have about ten or fifteen each made up with common logos like "Plate" and "Tune" and try to sell them at radio swapfests to defray the cost. Maybe you could do the same at tractor swap meets.

Incidentally, the tag on the side of my Super C is simply illegible due to age (both of the tag and of my deteriorating eyes).

With the help of a flashlight and a magnifying glass I can make out a serial number stamped (not embossed) in the center and the words MADE IN US embossed (not stamped) in VERY small letters across the bottom.

It seems to have been painted black originally (the starter housing is black) but IIRC it had an unpainted spot in the middle where the serial number is.

I think our 1948 John Deere MT had a VERY similar if not identical tag on the starter. I've also seen them on other tractors, truck starters, washing machine motors and even the motor on my c. 1972 Sears paint sprayer!

I hope you can get someone to post pics of one of these in better shape than mine. Eventually, I AM going to paint my poor ol' Super C...

I used the tags from Clasic Chevy. They are the ones in the second post, and are identical to the origonals. I converted my generator to 12 volts so I used the 12 volt tag. I stamped the Delco part number from the H parts book, and added a /12 volts at the end of the number. I tried to post a photo, but YTBB is doing funny things now and wouldn't let me post a photo. ken

Thanks Ken, Im going to order one tomorrow from there. Guess I'll find someone to stamp it or engrave it.

I did find a site (link below) that has the serial/part numbers listed. I guess they are correct.

Looks like a Super A should have # 1107093 on it.
