Paint thinner in the tank?

I popped the top of a gas tank of a '40 All-Fuel H I was examining at auction. The tank was empty save for a bit of moisture on the bottom, and it smelled like paint thinner. I thought it was distilate, because I actually have never smelled distilate. Maybe kerosene? Because I can't remember the last time I remembered smelling that. But someone said it was just old gas. That's how it smells.

True?

Yup. The gas has turned to varnish. First time I smelled that stuff was on an old SkiDoo snowmobile that was sitting in my parents' basement. It hadn't been run in years.

Varnish. As the gas ages and evaporates it does get a varnish like smell.

I wouldn't let that stop me from buying a tractor if the price was right and all else looked good.

Talked to Andrew yesterday afternoon. He was downtown Chicago and informed us he had changed into Civies and had his uniform in his backpack.
Just has to be a rebel I guess.

Yeah,

Old gas really has a "wang" to it.

Oh man! I bought an old Rover that had been sitting 15 years with a full tank of fuel. About half had evaporated. There was two inches of black, tar-like sludge in the bottom and the liquid was very brown and smelled so bad that it made my wife ill and the neighbors complained. I had to take the tank to a radiator shop to be boiled in a hot tank to get the gunk out.
