Hi guys. Ran my 300u for about 3 hours today working on the track, alot of pulling. I noticed the right side axle sqeaking. Thought maybe I forgot to grease it when I first got the tractor. Greased it and it went away. about half hour later, it came back, greased it again, it went away, onl to come back again. Now my thought is there is a seal between the axle housing and the outer bearings, and the grease zerk is soley for that outer bearing, and the seal must be leaking the grease into the tranny. The book calls for 2-3 stroke, enough to flush out the old grease. Well each time I put 5 stroke in, nothing came out by the hub, I just figured it was real dry. according to the exploded view from caseIH, there is a seal outside of the outer bearing, and nothing that would keep the grease from going into the transmission. I'm kinda cnfused her as to what to do to remedy it. When I had this tire off, I checked the axle and it spun real nicel without any catching, grinding, or noise. An thoughts on how to remedy this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks guys.

hey guys. Couldnt wait til tomorrow. I check all of the wheels and their bolts. all tight as can be. I decided my safest route would be to examine the axle. So I took the wheel and the hub off. then the axle housing cap. There is plenty of grease in their, the bearing seems fine, virtually no play (except what one could expect in tolerances on a bearing that big) The seal is in good shape. The oring that goes around the shaft between the bearing and hub (to prevent grease from getting into the tranny) is toast. Expect to get one from ace tomorrow hopefully. I guess since I've calmed my nerves about this area, if it still squeaks, i might further investigate or just say screw it. Thing I dont get is greasing it stopped the sqweaking, hmmm

I know that you think it is an internal noise, but it is quite possible that it has an external cause. On our 806, I thought for sure that an axle bearing was failing. I would always hear this squeaking noise in road gear, and the tractor seemed to bounce when there were no potholes in the road. It didn't seem to do it with the other tractors, so I was getting ready to think about tearing it down. Then I leaned against the fender riding next to my dad, and the noise went away. The clamshell fender was at a little bit of an angle when it was tightened down, and vibrations from bumps and sudden acceleration caused it to shift a little making a squeak and bang noise. The road surface thing took me longer to figure out. I finally figured it out when I drove our M. It did the same thing, but it hadn't done it before we readjusted the wheel spacing. Turns out, the bumps are in the road surface; the W6 didn't do it because it was too narrow, the 966 didn't do it because one wheel is adjusted further out, and the M and 806 are adjusted to the same width. Its been 7 years and there are no shavings in the filter and it still runs good.

thing is chadd, its a "cyclic" squeaking that coincides with the tire rotation.

also putting lube in it fixed it temporarily.

Jay,

Those noises are caused by loose lugs. Go around the tractor and tighten 'em all.

Jay, I'm not sure what wheels are on your tractor, But I suggest tightening all the bolts, including the hub bolts. Grindy squeeks cn come from there (more often than the bearing). JimN

about 99% sure its not for a few reasons.
The brakes used to squeak, and I serviced them. This is a very different sqeak, more like metal on metal contact. Also if it were the brakes, lubricating that fitting should not resolve it for a while.
