We have IH 656 hydro with loader. New rebuilt engine, just changed all the filters and oils. The tractor is just great for our chores and other work around the 8 acres of land my parents purchased. Its been working great at moving concrete slabs.. digging and everything. The problem is my father and i had a heated argument on how the tractor is run. Rpm and how i run the loader. I used to work full time 70+ hours a week for a farmer and basicly my jobs would be on a list and i would use what ever equipment was necessary to get the job done. Payloader/ 8630 with front blade, alot of other loaders, so ive had alot of experiance over the years with harldey nothing breaking down. The point is, i always run the tractor at around pto speed and just take it easy with the loader so i dont break anything. And i get the job done. My father barely idles the tractor and almost stalls it when he is on it. We have had a many discussians on the fuel usage, but ive always told him compared to the 3 hours of toiling aounr compared to me getting the job done in 30 min should not even be a argument. But i also tried to explain to him that its better for the hydrolics cooling when running the tractor at a higher speed, Am i right? basicly he has been on my arse everytime iam on the tractor. Any info would be appreciated in solving this argument

If you're running a 656 with a loader on it don't run It above 1,500 rpm you could ruin the pump I have a 1969 international 656 with a loader on it and i run it on 1,200 rpm and it works perfect.
if you are worried about ground speed use the hydro and not the throttle. hope this helps

I agree with Allan. IH recommended that you do not operate the hydraulics at lower than 1000 rpm. At the same time, PTO rpm seems a little high for just using a loader. We have a 2500A, and I use about 1200 to 1800 most of the time (PTO is at 2000 or so), unless I am loading someone in a hurry, and don't want to shift gears. As for the cooling of the hydraulic system vs. RPM, I would guess that it is probably a wash. At lower RPM, the flow rate is lower, the pump is putting out less pressure, so you are putting less heat in the fluid, but at the same time, at higher RPM, you are putting more heat into the fluid, but the engine fan is pulling in more air, improving convection.

allan's right on the money. i have 3 656 hydros that we load and feed cows with. for the loader, we run them between 12-1500 rpms, and feeding 10-1200. someone loading at 17-1800 rpms gets a fast visit from me. we get just as much done at moderate rpms, and its easier on the tractor and hoses.

Your father needs to come up on the throttle; no use lugging and killing the tractor like that.

But, at the same time, you need to drop 'er down a little. Have never heard of anyone running a loader around at wide open throttle. 1200 to 1500 rpm works really nice.

The tractor is not run at WOT. Ive always run it up to pto speed. Always been carefull about that. New engine with only 1 oil change, have had the tractor for less then a year, i dont want to risk spinning a main bearing or something like that

I used to have a IH 815 combine w/Hydro drive. Engine operating speed was 2800 rpm. same engine in 806 tractor ran at 2400. Gallons pumped and operating pressure are what makes a hydrostatic drive work properly, therefore under load they should be operated at their full capacity, but as always, good judgement should be used. Also, if changing ground speed, use the hydro instead of the throttle. Larry in Mo.
