Does an M have hydraulics? Are they just a drawbar hookup or are there supposed to be lifts????

I'm looking at a restorable pair right now and noticed that there aren't any arms on the back or any sort of lift?????

M's (as well as H's) had a "Lift-All" as an available option (AKA belly pump). They were located in the center section of the cast frame, between the clutch and the trans. As CNKS said, it worked only when it was engaged and the clutch was released. It should be easy to spot, even if it isn't being used, typically there are several pipe fittings protruding from both sides of the tractor. As CNKS said, there are some aftermarket 3-point hitch makers, such as Worksaver. Adding a hitch is a very popular modification. Search the archives for other info on hydraulics, good luck.

Mounted equipment was either underneath the tractor, mounted on the rear axle, or in the case of cultivators, both. Hydraulic cylinders were attached to the equipment, and in some cases to arms attached to the casting below the belly pump. For rear mounted implements rods ran from the front (either or both sides of the clutch/belly pump housing) cylinders to the implement in the rear. There is no formal "hitch".

Would you think I would be going wrong by picking up 2 M's for $600?

How difficult would it be to add a 3pt to the rear?

I don't think you could go wrong if you can get 2 Ms for $600. Hopefully would be able to build at least one good one. Standard M hydraulics are not live, that is you have to have clutch out to work. Also are usually one way for one way cylinder. You can add an aftermarket 3 point fairly easily, not necessarily cheaply though. Severl manufactures make different units.

So there are factory hydraulics on an M?????

I've looked and all I have been able to find are aftermarket pumps? Where is the pump on an M? I don't see any lines or hoses running from the engine to the rear so I assume that it's either in a housing or the pump is in the transmission.

I take it that these were drawbar only tractors, correct?

Hydraulics were an option. The belly pump is between the clutch and transmission. There are two outlets on the left side of the clutch housing/torque tube and one on the right. Plows, cultivators, listers, planters, etc could be mounted on the tractor. Thus they are not drawbar only tractors. In those days, the mounted equipment was provincial, that is an implement for one make of tractor did not fit another, in some cases implements of the same make did not interchange between models of the same make, unlike today's 3 point hitches. With some modification, the live pumps from the Super M--up will fit an M. Rebuilt belly pumps are available. A live pump from M&W will also fit, but is hard to come by. The W series, W4,W6/WD6, and W9/WD9 were drawbar only tractors.
