The 06 series was the first as mentioned below... however, the 660, 656, 666, and 686 all still had the old mechanical TA that would free-wheel when in low range.

All the tractors smaller than those mentioned above would also free-wheel - for example the 504, 544, etc. and smaller.

Might have been the 06 series, for sure it was the 56 series, but even then I think it was only the large chassis tractors that did not freewheel. Don"t quote me, but I think the 656 would still freewheel on the low side.

The 656 will free wheel in low side.

The first production series IH tractors that did not freewheel when in the TA position were the 706, 806, and later the 1206. On these tractors, the TA clutching is accomplished hydraulically, and the one way overrunning clutch is unnecessary to prevent the TA housing from rotating in reverse while its internal gears rotate, as I understand it. Someone who has actually torn one down and rebuilt it could probably provide you with more information or correct anything that I said which was inaccurate.

Excluding some after market units that used two hydralic clutch packs, all TA units use a one way clutch on the low (TA) side. The one way clutch is what transmits the power. There is a hydraulic cluch pack on the low side used to prevent free wheeling, but if the one way clutch fails, it is not capable of pulling under load.

Thanks for the correction. I am at school and don't have my IT manual with me, and I couldn't remember which clutch did what. I haven't had to remove one yet, and hope I don't have to for a while.

Not a problem. There is no one here that knows everything.

I have found the IH manuals to be much better than the IT because they not only explain the procedure for repair, but also the the way everything works. If you know how it works, it goes a long way toward trouble shooting problems.
