I have removed the cap on the front of the steering box and see what appears to be a nut on the end of the steering shaft. Before I try to remove it I wanted to ask about how to do it. Can someone please give me some information on how to remove it? It a Farmall 140 I think its from the early 70"s. Thanks for all the info you have givien in the past few days also. Thanks,
Keith

Keith: The 140 IH Blue Ribbon service manual calls it same as Banjo describes. If you have the plug out of the front, steering wheel off, just start turning the shaft, steering worm will turn it right out. If the steering box is still on the tractor, I think you have to jack tractor front end a bit for shaft to clear the ground.

as far as i know that nut behind the cap just holds the bearing on the shaft. you will have to remove the steering wheel as the shaft comes all the way threw the front of the steering housing to get it out. you will have to turn the shaft as the worm gear follows the steering gear for it to come out.
