Ok everyone, I got this baby home, but not without a struggle. Ended up that the brake bands were rusted tight and would not let the tractor roll after putting on the tire and airing the rest up. After fixing that minor problem we got her winched up onto the trailer.

Now the tear down begins, from the pics, can this engine be saved? Lots of rust as you can see.

What next steps do I take to remove the head.

Randy

I feel your pain.....

I'm working currently on a engine from an I-4 roller conversion that was nearly as bad, It wasn't as rusty on the bottom end though. It had rusted a hole in the pan that allowed all the water to drain out. The exhaust had been full of water till it froze and broke. The manifold had flaked off internally and filled the ports full of rust, #1 and 2 were full of water and #1 was rusted hideously, #4 was full of dirt dobber nest.

I tried unsuccessfully to tear it down and finally am taking the weenie way out and swapping in a C-169 shortblock from a 300-U.

That is a nice looking shop. I really like that farmall tool chest. I have a Farmall sand blaster. It was red when I bought it and I had a couple of extra Farmall M decals, so it is an M sand blaster.

Yea but you will have to get SOME new parts and LOve the shop , first rate. You will know more as ya make more pices and parts. If the block and head are not cracked and the crank ain't toaste a few brused knuckels and she will be fine.

WOW!!! That is a beutiful shop. Makes my eyes water just looking at it.

PS. If you can get her unstuck, she"s a fixer if the block is good.

I thought that I had taken on some challenges,
but that tractor is going to take a lot of work and money. Good Luck!

before i'd pull the head, get a gallon of pb blaster, pull the plugs and fill all the cylinders with it, also soak up the rocker shaft and tops of the valves with it. another thing you may want to do is put the oil pan back on with silicone sealer, then fill the crancase up with kerosene or diesel fuel, fill it all the way up to the top of the oil fill hole so the innards get a good soaking. let her soak for a week or two, then i'd pull the head. see if you can get er loose at that point. as long as the block is sound, the motor looks like a fixer.

Glennster, great tip on filling up the crankcase, I never would have thought of that.
Yes PB Blaster is my favorite soakin' formula, I do buy it by the gallon and soaked everything down on the outside of the H 2days before I started to tear stuff down, even the manifold nuts spun right off ; )

have seen worse and made like new again! Head looks rough in the ports though,, look for cracks in that area especially. Id throw the whole engine in the hot tank and let it sit for a few days, then try to bust it loose, might be easier than fighting the rust. JMHO, Chad
