Ok Gang, I have just finised a complete overhaul on my Super C. She started right up and sounds great, trouble is that the head gasket is leaking around the outside..:( It didn't start right away, it was after it had been running awhile. It appears to be seaping in three or four spots around the outside edge of the gasket. I can tell that it is leaking into the cylinders, I havn't run it a whole lot, enough to get her warm a couple of times to adjust the rocker arms. I am keeping an eye on the oil to see if it starts getting milky. Has anyone experianced the ever before, and what do you guy's think??

Well, I do really appreciate all the input guys.

I removed the rockerarm cover and rocker arms lastnight and retorqued the head bolts. They all were needing another tweekin. I bet all of them I turned at least 1/8th to a 1/4 turn.:) I didn't get a chance to start it up and run it, will do that tonight. I will get her warmed up again and see what happens.

The machine shop guy did chek the deck clearence on the sleeves, and stated that they were where they needed to be.

My SC acted the same way, when I re-torqued it it got about 90% of the leak, it stopped all together after 20 or 30 hours running. I usually use aluminum paint also, but didn't on this one.

I did the head gasket on a 460D last year. Someone on this board said to get a Victor gasket which I did. Also used Copper Sealant spray on both sides of the gasket. Someone also said to check the bolt length to make sure they do not bottom out-especially if the head is shaved. I used thicker washers on the head bolts when I put it back together. No leaks so far. Seems good and tight.

I did the head gaskets on a Nissan truck recently which has an aluminum head. Interesting, the guy at the head/machine shop said you can use sealer on a cast iron head bolting down to cast iron block to create a tight seal. He said no sealer for an aluminum head bolting to a cast iron block. There is graphite on the gasket and there should be movement to allow for varying expansion rates (aluminum v. cast iron). I have also heard of using aluminum paint instead of copper sealer for M's. I could not find any aluminum paint, but the copper sealer is made for head gaskets. Hopefully, the re-torque will work.

It has a lot todo with the manufacturer of the gaskets. Some are the old tin style, others are composite.A composite gasket has sealant around the water and oil passages, and requires no sealant.

The bottom line is if the gasket manufacturer requires sealant and retorque, thats wghat you need to do.

If it were my tractor,I'd pull the head off it,seal it with the sealer they recommend, and put it back together with the same gasket. Its not a very big job to get the head off one of those.I did one,a 50 C.

Make sure its not installed upside down,if possible. We've all done it.

A coat of alluminum spray paint on each side of gasket and allowed to dry to touch will also work well. I have used it countless times with great success.

When I put the head on my 300 it leaked good.
I repulled the head.
Cleaned the deck up real good with a scrubbing pad on a die grinder and then sprayed that copper coating from NAPA on it.
Worked great. Also did that on my 706 and it never leaked.

This is the deck before I cleaned it on my 706

Did the gasket need sealer?, Did you heat cycle engine and re-torque? My A was rebuilt when I got it but they used no sealer and did not retorque head-leaked. Had to pull and replace gaskets. Head gasket said "sealant/retorque required" on top side of gasket. I used copper coat spray. No leaks now.

Well, I visited with my machine shop guy, and he said not to worry about putting any sealer on any of the gaskets, he said that was what the gasket was for. He got me the gasket set, and there where no instructs on the gasket, I guess it woun't hurt to retorque the head, would it. I wouldn't be out anything... I will try that tonight..

As far as I'm concerned, you ALWAYS need sealer on the head gasket. I use copper coat, but on my C I used plain old silcone. Torque the head to 80 ft lbs. Get your gasket from Case IH -- it is worth the extra cost.

Was the cylinder head check for being warped? When torquing the head did you start in the center
and torque in both directions using about 3 torque
settings? Hal

Yeah, the block deck, and the cylnder head were both checked. And I did do a three stage tightening sequence working from the center and going outward both ways, in a star type pattern. I just talked to my machine shop and they said to try and retorque the head. If it was still giving me fits, he would come by and have a looky see.. The gasket is different than most I have seen. It is not a metal one, but a thick fibre type..

Did you check the protrusion of the sleeves ab ove the deck?? .003"-.005" is the spec, up around .007 and it will leak. I learned this the hard way.

Retorquing may solve the problem. Hal
