I recently picked up some early 1939-1940 H front cast hubs, that hold the rim on with the three locking clamps. The bosses on the back side of the hubs where the bolts go to hold the clamps are broken out, like the wheels were driven with the blots loose and the side pressure cracked them out.

Anyone know if this was a common problem with the first design?

I believe that W-4 and W-6 use the same hubs if I'm not mistaken. My 41 H wide fron uses these hubs as well, and the 46 M I have with the Swartz wide front has them on it as well. Maybe you can source W-4 hubs easier,I believe that the spindle is the same.

I'm going through the same thing with a 41 H now. The wheels were run with the bolts loose and the outer edge of the hub, where the bolt holes are, have chunks of the casting broken off. The back of the hub where the bolt heads go are chipped out, so I dont know if the bolts will hold. I'll know more when I get them sand blasted. I'll try to get a pic when I get them cleaned up. I did know where some of the old non adjustable hubs were in a boneyard. May need to check on them again. ken

I don't think it was a "common" problem. I have a pair of these early hubs and a really like them. For me, These early hubs are better becase they are stronger than the later ones. My H had the late ones and all of the mounting spots were welded up on one rim, and two on the other with one cracked again and the rims on them where cracked around the rivet holes, so I changed to the early ones, they were correct for my 1943. I like these early style hubs better because they look better and to me, they seem stronger and better made, although the late ones are nice because you can adjust the tread (how far apart the wheels go out or in) Hope this helps. Andy.
