About 2 months ago, I cut down a walnut tree that my wife's grandfather set out at the old homeplace in 1910. The main body of the tree at the botton was 36 inches in diameter. When I cut it down, the piece was 12 feet long. My son loaded it on a dump truck with a track loader. The piece was way way too large to put on my saw mill to slab it out. So, I sent it to a friends place who has a regular saw mill and slabed it out for me in to a rectangular piece 24 in x 24 in. After running the metal detector over it, finding one nail, I loaded it on the mill with a skid steer by lifting one end then the other. It was too heavy to completely lift. Once I got it on there, I began slicing it. After 2 hours, I got 23 good 1 inch slices 24 inches wide. I then stood those slices up and cut them down to 3-- 7 1/2 inch boards. So, Out of this log, I got 69--1" X 7.5 x 12 foot walnut boards along with a small lot of misc stuff. It took me 3 hours to haul and stack it by myself. Sooooo, in the next lifetime, it will be dried out enough to do something with it.

Just out of curiosity, why did you cut it down in the first place?

I owned a farm near the Charlotte NC airport. The city condemed my place and took it away from me. I cut it to pass around the family as momentos of times past!

At first I thought that tree was in CT, Thats where you from right Tom. Anyway thats a heck of Blackwalnut I'v personaly only seen a handfull of saw mill sized logs in CT. And I spend alot of time looking at trees beign a Forsetry major lol. In CT, there is not to many Blackwalnuts but there are some Butternut some people call it Whitewalnut is now becomeing scarce and brings a pretty good stumpage price. Pretty nice grain on that too, not as dark.

I planted 2000 walnuts in 1995. Maybe my grandkids will get some benefit from them.
