I'm making my way thought the finals on our 48 SA and ran into a stubborn brake drum. Of course it is on the right hand side with the long diff shaft to work around. What is the easiest way to remove the drum so I can get the shaft out of the final drive housing? Should I press the shaft off the drum and out of the housing in a press, or rig a puller to get the drum of first? I would appreciate any scholarly advice, Greg

Greg: I have the IH Blue Ribbon service manual for the 140 right in front of me and it says remove the RH final drive shaft as follows. a. Remove the drive shaft bearing cover. b. Remove the drive shaft from the final drive housing. c. remove the lock nut and setscrew from the brake drum. d. With a rubber mallet, tap the drive shaft out of the brake drum.

I also notice on the LH, they suggest using a puller that hooks into opening in the drums. I guess the problem would be finding a puller long enough for right side. In both cases they are suggesting remove the shaft from the housing, then remove the drum. Once you have the shaft out, that will increase your options, bit of heat, hydraulic press, etc.

Hugh that side the shaft will not come out of the diff housing because the brake drum has to come off the shaft before the shaft goes out thru the diff housing. Same way on the left the drum has to be removed before the shaft will go out thru the diff housing and on that side the shaft housing cannot be removed until the brake drum is removed. At least the right side the housing will come off.

gene: The newer tractors must be different, you'll notice I did say IH 140 Blue Ribbon service manual. I've just gone back and double checked, in both cases they say remove drum and shaft from final drive.

They can be a bear sometimes just had to use a torch to remove one. Press would be the best if you can get it rigged to press off either way aint no fun. The reason i used torch was that i had some spares and wasnt no big deal to ruin one.
