17, 22, 24,30 degree nights, and cold, wet days and the bugs are not flying, so the purple martins are dying. I have lost about half of mine. Bought crickets, mealworms and even put out scrambled eggs. Tried shooting the crickets up in the air with a blow gun. A neighbor has done all of the above with success, but he is around all the time to work with them and I travel.

The trees are all burned back, the wheat probably severely damaged, most folks almost ran out of hay, we had 3" of ice on the ground for 6 weeks, longer than my 80 year old neighbor ever remembers. Where is Al Gore"s Global warming?

Mother Nature works with a cruel hand much of the time. But, she gets the job done.

We had a similar problem in 1972 when a freak storm went through and dumped 8 or 10 inches of rain. The adult martins all had nests full of young birds and when I came home from work my said
there's something wrong in the martin house. She said there's a terrible odor when near the martin house. I pulled the martin house down and all the baby birds had probably drowned. I never had any birds after that. I threw out the martin house that I had built and we bought 3 more at different times, still never had a bird.

I told her if we wanted to get birds we would need to move. I know how you feel losing those birds. Hal
PS: Picture of the martin house I built in 1966.

Best thinking is not in terms of who thought up what, (and Al Gore did not think up Global Warming) The best scientific thinking is a reflection of the best data gathered with the best instruments, interpreted to be understandable information of the highest value to every person. Global Warming is just that global, and not local. In ---fact--- a prime component is abnormal variability and changes that are both colder, warmer, drier, wetter than memory serves to recall. Those patterns of change are real. Those glaciers are melting, those ice fields are moving. Those storms are more unusual. Please do not blame the messenger for delivering content denying a preconception. Janicholson Environmental and Technological Studies, St, Cloud State University.

Jim: I agree with you. However, I think what is frustrating to most is, what Al Gore suggests is causing it (21st century Americans' life-style) does not explain the Great Global Warming of 1000-1400AD, nor does it explain why the polar ice caps on Mars are currently melting. Therefore, a lot of folks think Gore is light in the head and ignoring other major real factors, such as a naturally occuring period of a warmer sun. mike

For the last 360 thousand years, CO2, methane, and global temps have been in extraordinary lock step. Small short term temp differentials are there, but they fail to fit the definition needed to debunk the larger pattern. If we are conservative, we plan for the 90th percentile of the worst case. If Al predicts the worst, and 50 percent believe half of what is really indicated, we begin to believe as a nation, hemisphere, and planet. Then we can accomodate enough change, enough trouble, and enough political stress to survive if the prediction is only 50% as bad as it could be, and understandable if it is very bad. We are learning that we affect the actual climate of earth. It is like the first person to ride a bicycle, (but we cannot afford to fall off). Conservation first, Farmers lead the way, and provide for all!

Mars Dust in its current arrangement has the most reflective material buried, and low albido (dark) sand on substantially larger land areas. (science News, this week) JimN

Well, I reckon you could be right. But, common sense tells me that, since about 1965-70, the earth has been carrying way more world population than it can sustain for the long haul. If that is correct, either nature, or man, will harshly bring it back into line. Probably won't be very pleasant to live through, though. mike

It will be interesting, it might be dangerous, and change is usually not in your pocket. JimN

Al Gore's global warming is a farce. scare tactics for political gain, while he sits in a mansion that eats more power than most cities!

Anyway, sorry to hear about yoru birds. It's been warm weather here in CA up until yesterday when the clouds and rain came. We have a bird nest that was built right on the corner of the house where we walk past to and from the front door. The mom freaks and flys away every time we walk by. Hopefully she'll get used to us soon.

Mike, I couldn't agree more with your comments about algore! Right on, at least there are a few of us that can still think for ourselves, reason, and call B.S. when we smell it!
