Hi Folks. I normally hang out on the tractor talk board, but I've got one for you all. Brought home an H today. Went out to get the serial number to check the year. Tag isn't where it should be. It isn't anywhere. It SHOULD be on the left side of the bellhousing behind the block...aluminum plate about 2 by 4 inches mounted horizontally right? I don't even see old mounting holes. It's not in the right side either. I called the previous owner and he said it HAD one last time he saw it. What the heck is going on here? I know I can get the year from the casting code, but I wanna find that dang old tag. I'm gonna lose sleep tonight folks I'm tellin' ya. Thank you for helping.

You can get a new tag from OEM for 43 dollars. There are two different ones for an H. The old style from 39 thru 49 and new stye from 50 thru 54, so you will need to determine the year to get the right one. Oem will put your serial number and model on the tag and furnish rivets to install it with. Their number is 1-800-283-2122.

I agree that if it's gone, it's gone. However, you can feel pretty certain that the engine block serial number will be the same, or darn close, as these guys have said. If it were me, I'd have a new one made and mount it.

I would describe it as being mounted vertically directly behind the carb intake hose on the bellhousing. But, if it's gone, it's gone. Go look on the engine block on the flat surface under the spark plugs. If it an early H, the serial number will be the same as the chassis number. If it is a late H, it will still be pretty close to the chassis number. mike

Exactly, the engine serial number is located very close to #1 spark plug. My 1940 H and also my 1950 H have engine serial numbers that match the serial number on the tag.

Thanks Mike. Not what I wanted to hear though haha. I think it's gone even though the owner said it had one last time he saw it. I'll look again tomorrow. Thanks.
