Noticed the right side rear axle outside oil seal was leaking on my 230. When I removed the seal cap, about 1/2 to 1 quart of gear case lube leaked out. I noticed on a parts blowup that there is also an inside oil seal located just outside the inside axle bearing. This makes me believe that gearcase lube should not even be reaching the outside seal to begin with and that I may need to replace the inside seal as well. Can anyone shed any light on this for me and maybe tell me specifically:
1. Is it a big deal (complicated, special tools etc.) to pull the axle carrier housing and replace the inside seal?
2. Does the outside bearing get lubed entirely from the grease fitting on the axle cap and not from gear case lube? 3. If I don't want to mess with the inside seal, would it hurt anything to just let it continue to leak into the axle carrier, and stop the flow at the new outside seal?

Thanks for any and all help.

Tom

That all seems to make sense. Think I'll just do the outer seal, top off the gearcase and see if I can get another 50 years out of her. Thanks for the help Dave BN and Georgeky.

You are right the outer seal is for grease in the outer bearing. Dont put but a couple shots of grease at a time to prevent seal damage. The inner seal is harder to replace. The top cover needs to come off, so the bull gear can be removed in order to get to the seal. I don't suppose it would hurt anything if you can get it stopped at the outer seal.
