Hi, I have a question about the air cleaner on my 1943 Farmall H. My air cleaner is plugged. How should I clean it??? It has screen mesh inside. It looks very plugged. Is there any way the air cleaner can be taken apart to be cleaned??? or how should I clean it??? Thanks for the help. Andy.

Thank you for your replies. I really did not want to try "burning" or torching the air cleaner so I tried my own way. When the air cleaner oil cup is removed, there are three small tabs that go across the screen. I cut them and slipped the rest of that part off. I carefulley bent the lip all the way around enough to remove the screens. I carefully removed each screen with a needle nose vise grip (when I needed it). The screens were very plugged and there was dirt all over the place where the air cleaner sucks air so the air cleaner did not have much air flow. I'm cleaning out the entire canister and the screens and it will be re-assembled. I'll carefully bent the lip back once the screens are installed and slip the tab assembly back on and I might weld the tabs or something or maybe try using a hose clamp on the end in case I ever need to clean it again. Andy.

Try carburetor cleaner, too.

Andy I got a H some time back that had been used to pull a cotton picker and the screen was packed with lint. I tried several solutions that did not work. Finally decided to use a candle flame to try burning it out. That wasn't hot enough so used a heating tip on a torch and got it pretty clean. You have to be extra careful or You will melt the screen wire quickly if You get it too hot. Once I got the cotton burning I just let the cannister sit upright on a welding table and burn itself out.

The mesh is not easily removed, you will damage the housing if you do. You can soak and rinse it in parts cleaner several times. I doubt if many people did this, we didn't, but the entire air cleaner was supposed to be removed every 60 hours, and cleaned with kerosene.
