On a letter series how can you tell that a tractor has a low or high compression motor with out taking the vavle cover off or the starting tank and the hole in the hood where the starting tank is?

If the engine has not been modified, the starting tank means it is distillate or kerosene, thus low compression. Gasoline is high compression.

yoyu can also look for a suffix on the serial number tag. like on the H and M, X1 indicates high compression gas. there also prefexies that indicate kero and distialte also. other small thigs to look for are shutters and like uyou siad the small tank.

Unless it has a LP head, or a Super H head, the casting numbers are under the valve cover. Run a compression test! if its 0-100 psi its low compression, 100-130, its decent, 130+ and its pretty good.
