Looking for a heavy tillage 4th gear set for a 560.

Bottom gear is part number 358859R2 and is 38 teeth
Top gear is 358866R2 and is 35 teeth.

billonthefarm has it right - they change they increase the suffix when they change the part. Of course, when one part changes, that doesn't mean that the parts interacting with it necessarily change. Additionally, if I remember correctly, when they increase the suffix, they make sure the new part will work in place of the old. So, you should be able to replace an R1 with an R2 if that helps.

Should be easy to find, thats the same gears as standard forth gear in SMTA,400 and 450 tractors. If you can't find them I can check to see if I have a extra set.

The SMTA 4th gears use a R1 suffix. The 560 heavy tillage gears use the same number but advance to R2. What's the difference? Is it in the metalurgy? Thanks.

Don't know, wouldn't think there different metalurgy because in some tractors later than MTA you can find a R1 being driven by a R2 or the other way around. Can't remember for sure but think some 560 tractor gears were still the R1.

Dave & Wardner: I think what R1, R2, R3, etc indicate are different production runs of the same part. Just recently some of us got into this subject on SA, SC, 100 and 200 engine blocks. SA after serial number 310000 and SC start off with 354898 R1, and by the end of 100-200 production the number is 354898 R3. I"ve run across a few of these tractors in between those dates with 354898 R2.

Whenever the suffix for a part number changed there was a change in the part. It depended on the part but minor changes would result in a suffix change and major changes would cause a new part number to be created. If you notice some parts carry the r1 suffix for the entire life of the part and others update numerous times. The r91 type numbers indicate there are multiple parts and it is some type of assembly. Things have changed alot at CNH but that is how it was done way back when. bill

Bill: You have not convinced me. 35 years ago I rebuilt transmissions in my 300 and 560, mainly with used gears. I don't remember particular part numbers, however I do remember one could use mixed suffixes on gears but not mixed part numbers. That is as it applied to a driven gear matching with a driver. That information was given me by an IH partsman.

I'm not saying your wrong either, changes don't always mean change in physical appearence. I guess one has to decide whether it is a minor or major change. If one looks at offset tractors, (A, SA, 100, 130 and 140) IH used at least 6 block part numbers, each having 1 to 4 suffix. We all know everyone of those will bolt up to any of the tractors, however when it comes to putting working parts in a particular block, it becomes a bit more complicated. I'm sure there are not 20-25 piston and sleeve kits sizes for these tractors, but there are aproximately 1/2 dozen.

Ya, I saw that in the 400-450 book where R1 and R2 were used in the same gearset. My 560 book has both 4th gearsets using R2 on both shafts.
