When running on gas for startup, what rpm the engine running on a 400 diesel? I don't see that spec in the manual, ust a 600 rpm idle speed on diesel. Or is it the same?

Thanks gents. I was trying to figure out how it worked on a tractor I just saw. I didn't see a throttle on the carb so I wondered.

Jim I put the new tach cable that had been in a box for months on my 450 diesel this morning so I could tell you what rpm it is running. On gas it is showing right at 800 rpm as D Slater suggested. There is no throttle for the carb.

Don't know what RPM is called for, I set them around 800 to 900 RPM. If you need to change your speed adjust the air valve height on the carburetor. Carburetor has to be removed to do it and its there on top. Gap should be set no closer than 3/32 and no wider than 7/64. If there's a problem with idle make sure everything else is set correct before adjusting.

There is no spec because there is no adjustment. The engine runs on a small open venturi, no throttle plate. The speed depends on richness. The only control is a choke which needs typical feathering to get starting underway. Making it run as fast as it can on that small carb is the goal. It allows fastest warm up and switch to Diesel. Jim, the only thing my book shows says 625 rpm low idle speed.
