I don't post here, mostly because I just display my colossal ignorance about Farmalls ;->

But I've stumbled into an opportunity to purchase a '49 H w/ mounted sickle mower and (homebuilt?) loader...

Here is the tractor I'm looking at...

The good:
Starts easily, fresh carb rebuild, easily shifts into all gears, each brake will lock its respective tire, no smoke, notched throttle plate like new, front tires & 1 rear tire are like new.

The not-so-good:
Heavy wear on the knife bar, lots of oil/grease leaks, hydraulics only lift the loader ~6", exposed ram ends are rusty (mostly surface rust), lights missing, no 3-point.

Where is the hydraulic reservoir? (I suspect the hydraulic oil may be low). At low RPM's, activating the (belly?) pump causes the engine to "slightly" load, but doesn't cause any other noticeable activity

What else is required to add a functional belt pulley? Just the pulley? Or....?

And any idea what model of sickle mower?

So is this a reasonable buy at a little under $1k? (I'm in SW Idaho, if that makes any difference).

Thanks,

Nathaniel

Rusty and others are correct, the loader is a factory IH. The bucket is home made though. You are just low on oil. you can also shine the rust off of the cyl with fine emery cloth, so it doesn"t eat up the oil seals. I have a loader identical to this one. Worth the money. Not sure about the mower, it"s an old pitman mower. The newer ones were a balanced head mower. # 120 I believe the newere ones were.

I sold a 44 with a loader, didn't run, for $1300, five years ago. It also had bad rear rims, due to choride leaks. And a bunch of other problems....

Thanks for the replies...

I did not know the loader was an IH...some of it looks home-made to me. ;->

Another question...If equipped with a belt pulley, does the pulley turn continually? Where is (or where should) the lever for the pulley be located?

Also, where do I look for the hydraulic oil fill/level?

Thanks again,

Nathaniel

I forgot the oil filler, it is directly in front of the pulley unit. There will be a tube sticking up with a cap of some kind on top. Take the cap off and add fluid. Hy-Tran or any good sraight grade oil, such as SAE 10,20 or 30 weight non detergent oil will work. The hotter the weather the heavier oil you use.

No it don't run all the time. There is a little rod sticking straight back under the steering post, that pushes in or out to turn it on or off. You mus push in the clutch to engage the unit. When you let out on the clutch the unit will turn.

Run...don't walk....and buy that tractor!
A couple of other points
Most H's don't have 3 pt hitch...you can buy an a/m setup if you really need it.
The loader is factory, and might need some work to get working right, but looks solid and will
lift more than it should. The rusty ram ends are typical, not too much to worry about there.
Almost any working H has assorted oil leaks...don't let that scare you. Most leaks are either non consequential or fairly easy to fix.
Buying lights or repro. lights will cost some money...ask the guy if he has the lights sitting around in a bucket by chance.
You can bolt on a belt pulley if you want, they are readily available.
Lastly...the load when running the hydraulics is normal at low rpm, especially at cooler temps.
Good luck!

The loader is a McCormick #31 power loader. The cylinders are NOT two way, and cannot be used for 2 way. That loader is "LIFT" only. The bucket does appear to be homebuilt, possibly used a portion of the original. The sickle bar mower also appears to be a #31, IH built. I think parts are still available from Case-IH for the mower.

For what it's worth, that loader is capable of lifting more weight than what is safe. I think the asking price is very fair.

Rusty, are you sure about the mower? I have a 31 and it is a lot different than that one. That mower looks like a C mower. My 31 is a semi mount with a tail wheel. The cast head where the bar attaches is also different. Regardless some parts are available for the mower. I bought new pitman ends and they are high. over 100 dollars for both ends. The belts are easy to get and bearings, but things such as the drive pulley's are not available. The pitman style cycle is not available as a complete cycle from IH but the parts are. I use to get them at TSC, but haven't been able to find one there for 4 or 5 years.

That outfit is worth the money. That is a factory loader. looks like a model 30 power loader, it will bring 300 dollars itself maybe more. I sold a mowing machine like that last week for 175 dollars,so that would leave 4 to 500 in the tractor. If it was close I would buy it myself. You might want to ask about the drawbar as they are a little high to buy.

Actually, there is a drawbar (repaired?) and at least a partial battery box included.

What kind of lift (weight / height) is that loader capable of? Any chance the cylinders are two-way?

The best I remember the book which I don't have right now says it has a 500 pound lift capacity, but they will beat that. The cylinders are one way, unless the tractor has the optional valve it is only one way also. I am not sure about the height, but it is more than you would think.

Looks like a pretty good H. It has the McCormick loader the factory loader for the H. all you have to do is put a pully on it and go. from what it looks like nice tin, a set of weights, decent to good tires. Here in CT that would fetch about 1500 to 1700. maybe alittle more if it had fresh paint people like that new paint must make them run better ;) LOL.
