Farmall H leaks grease on the right side by the pulley. I removed the three bolts and pulled the shaft out. How does it come apart? There are two bolts on the end with a peice of wire through them. What's with that? There's two large bearings with snap rings holding them in place. Will they come off if the snap rings are removed or do they have to be pressed on and off?

Thanks for the response. Hass, sounds like exactly what I was afraid of. Even when it's not running it leaks. I think the trans is design to sling grease up there. Anyhow, I think I'll put it back together for now and leave it. Now that I know what I'm getting into.

The bearings and gear have to be pressed off the shaft and then back on. A bearing separator is needed to do it properly. The bolts on the end of the shaft are a retainer for the gear and bearings. The wire is a safety to keep the bolts from coming out. When you put this back together, make sure the shims under the flange are put back like they were. These set the gear lash. Also there is no gasket under the flange, just the shims, so all must be completely clean on reassembly, or you are going to have leaks around the flange.

Dunno,

Think I'd do one of two things. Put 'er back together and shut the darned thing off. Shouldn't leak if it isn't spinning should it?

Or, build a plate and just cover that hole.

Haven't seen one of those pulleys used since the fifties when they were utilized on the one-row beet toppers and sometimes used to power irrigation well heads.

Is it leaking at the shaft or is it leaking from under the pulley unit, were it meets with the tractor. If you are talking about the output shaft you can't just pull it out it has to be taken apart to remove it. There is a gear and bearing on the other end of it, that is accessed by removing the entire unit from tractor. The seal should be able to be replaced from the end towards the pulley.

I'm talking about the seal on the output shaft next to the pulley. I was able to remove the shaft by removing 3 bolts. Tapped on the pully flang and it slid out. But it has a gear that drives it on the end and two large bearings. haven't figured out how it comes apart.

When I last had one apart 10 years ago I thought I had to remove the gear from that shaft before it would come out, maybe I am thinking about a different shaft on something else. You should be able to replace the seal. I believe that it has a leather seal on the pulley end of housing to seal the shaft. It will be in a groove cut in the end cap itself. The gear and bearings will have to be removed to replace seal. I don't remember if there is a nut and washer holding the gear on shaft or not. If not it may need to be pressed off and bearings to.
