The '51 I'm looking at doesn't have a belt pulley, and I want one. The owner has a '53 Super M that has a pulley on it. I didn't ask him if he would throw it in, but I might if it would work on the '51 H.

Will it?

The pulley gear box assembly is not the same for the H and the M. However, the flange mount on the pulley shaft is the same and the pulleys themselves can be used on either tractor. There are a variety of pulley sizes available and which one to use is determined by the belt speed you want. The H pulley shaft turns faster than the M, therefore, the H pulleys are typically smaller than the M pulleys. Also some pulleys have 8 bolts and some 4 bolts, but the bolt circle is the same so either will bolt up. The larger pulleys are usually 8 bolts.

The H and M had a variety of belt pullies of different sizes and type (Paper to Steel). HOWEVER, the pulley drive mechanism that bolts on top of the "Torque Tube" below the fuel tank is different and not interchangeable.

The 51 will have a plate just in front of the operator platform with bolts holding it down. That is where the gearbox is placed to get power off of the constant mesh gear. H gear boxes must come from that series farmall to work Not an M.
The little plate is nice (and in demand by people "Pulling" Hs covering the location where the box (a usually ordered option) was bolted on.
Get this Unit!!. JimN

Just a little nit-pik here. The gearbox runs off its own gear, not the constant mesh gear. In fact some utilities (maybe all ?) aren't furnished with the gear. Info source is D Slater.

Yes it is. The constant mesh gear is double wide to run the countershaft and grab the mainshaft when in top gear. The larger diameter BP drive gear is forward of that gear and only has one function.

It may not have a pulley because it may not have a gearbox. The gearboxes are not interchangeable.

Yes, you should be negotiating for extras to "sweeten the deal". Try to get whatever is missing or items that you want. You should start with a battery and battery box. Even if the battery is no good, you will save $5 on the core charge when you have to buy a new one.

Try to get this stuff at no cost. Make him understand that you want a complete tractor at your agreed price.

How would I find out if the gearbox will accept a belt pulley?

I thought that all Farmall H's could accept one. I guess I was wrong, eh? Learn something new every day!

Yes, the pulleys are the same for both the H and the M.

No, the pulleys are not the same. It is true that they wiil interchange, but the pulley used on an M was usually a larger diameter than what would have typically been used on an H.
