Hi All , I ordered all the bushings , seals and thrust washer today so now I need to get the bushings out of the bolster . I was thinking of using a air hammer . I'm assuming the bottom one comes out the bottom and the top one comes out the top . Does anyone have an easy surefire way to remove these bushings as painlessly as possible ? Thanks ! ...Randy

BTW- this is on a M .

A muffler cutting chisel (NAPA and others have them) is flat in cross section, has a recangular but cup shaped cutting end, and has a bend in the middle. when used to remove pipes, it removes a curl of metal down the length of the overlapping joint on the pipes, relieving pressure to allow reuse of the inner pipe. they work great for this and many other uses. Indespensable. JimN

I used much the same method as BobM, but since I don't have an air hammer I used a small cold chisel.
Good luck, Wm

I've found the gas wrench works the best to remove bushings. For it to work they have to be steel backed. Just heat the edge and hit the O and you'll burn thru in a second. You will not hurt the casting as it will not have time to get hot.

I was kind of reluctant to tell anyone my method of removing the top bolster bushng but I think mine is the safest method offered yet. Try using a sawsall and a fine metal cutting blade and just cut through the brass bushing works for me.

Randy - I had good luck on my Super H using an air hammer with a chisel bit to cut thru the bushing shells lengthwise. Then simply collapse the cut bushings with a big screwdriver and pull 'em out.
