I have a 49 M that currently has a mag on it, I'm gathering parts to convert it to a distributor one day. I have a IH distributor mount and one that is a right angle mount (Delco, I think). Is one of these better than the other and what is everyone's suggestion as to which to use. I don't have a distributor yet so I open on options of which to buy.

Thanks,
Bobg

You can convert the magneto to be your distributor by installing an automotive coil and using the points in the mag. You would need to disconnect the mag's coil wire at the points. Here's a picture of one that was converted. Hal
PS: You would need to run battery voltage to the
new coil.

Mags may be bullet proof but I have about 8 that went down over the years when Dad was running letter series tractors and were replaced with distribiturs. When mag acted up when tractor needed to be in field we did not have luxury of tinkering with it all day. We found distribiturs to be simpler, cheaper and easier to maintain than mag. IH saw some reason to phase mags out about 60 years ago.

I'm with Steve a mag is almost bullet proof and also not very hard to fix when it does need work. If it where me I would leave it on and it will work good as long as you do the TLC need once in a while. Ya I only have one tractor with a mag but if the others had them they would stay on them also.

I'll add my two cents as usual: Why switch? I personally prefer the magneto because my tractor will still run with a dead battery!

Steven,

I'm not switching right now, the mag still works good. I will probably replace the mag with a distributor if/when it goes out.

I'm guessing here, but I SUSPECT internal "wear items" are PROBABLY more readily available for the IH nowadays than for the Delco.

The Delco will have the same points and many other parts in common with International trucks of the same vintage, Chevorlet and GMC trucks and cars of the same vintage, and John Deere and Allis Chalmers tractors equipped with Delco distributors.

Yes, I know the points and such are common parts, as are point sets for MOST equipment, even old stuff.

What I had in mind were wear parts like the drive gears and centrifugal advance parts, and even the clips to hold the distributor cap on.

AFAIK, much of that stuff is still available from your local CNH dealer for the IH units, while parts of that nature are impossible to find from DELCO, unless you know of someone who has them NOS.
