Super C runs out of gas?

Morning everyone.
It's been a while since I posted here. Been working on a little ford, but now I have another farmall, and I need a little advice. Got a Super C running pretty decent (rebuilt carb, full ignition rebuild, 12V conversion), and it will idle all day long (nothing sounds better), but if I run it above half throttle, it just runs out of fuel and dies. If I wait 30 seconds or so, it will fire back up and idle just fine again. I have a Carter carb on it right now (currently looking for a zenith or marvel). Any ideas?

Got a Cub that sure won't run with inline filter. Must be low gravity in Michigan, huh?For real!

The old tractors I have had have alway had some degree of crap running around the bottom of the tank. It migrates to the bottom of the tank and lays on top of the flush fitting from the fuel bowl and restricts the flow of gas.

Drain & dry the tank, then vaccum out what you can.

Remove the fuel bowl and press and/or solder in a 2" long piece of copper tubing. Prior to installation, crimp the top closed and drill a couple dozen 1/16" holes up and down the tube. This will allow gas thru and not create a "sink drain" for the scale pieces to lay into and plug up. Has worked fine on several of my tractors.

I use rubber hose from sediment assy to the FRAM clear see thru filters then to the carb this lets me see when they are getting full of junk. You mite need to drain the tank and check the sediment assy the inlet hole can get junk in and not let a good flow thru. You can get a new gasket and screen from NAPA

I would take line off at carburator and turn fuel on (have container to catch gasoline). If you have good steady stream there your problem is probaly in carb if not problem is somewhere between carb and fuel tank.

You need to clean and inspect the fuel system all the way back to and including the tank. There is a screen in the sediment bowl that could be clogged, there could be debris in the tank that is obstructing the inlet to the sediment bowl, there is a screen in the fuel inlet at the carburetor, you could possibly have a pinched fuel line, ot the gas tank cap itself could be dirty and not allowing air to come in as the fuel is going out. I can get a brand new Marvel-Schebler carb for your tractor.

Also, don't rule out a weak ignition coil. It can cause the same symptoms.

The fuel line is good. I put a piece of flexible line on it with an inline filter. There is some crap coming out of the gas tank, which I am trying to catch in the sediment bowl and the inline filter. I took out the inlet fitting in the carb when I was cleaning it for rebuild, but there was no longer a screen there to clean! Is it possible that I just need to clean out the carb again? Any particular area or jet I should pay attention too?
What are you asking for the marvel?
Fuel is flowing easily into the inline filter (it is clear), so I think my problem is down river from there.

I didn't recieve it. Might have been a glitch in the system. I sent one to myself and it worked, so you might want to try again.

Rusty, I will try to send my email again.

Believe it or not, the inline filter is the problem. They are too restrictive unless there is a fuel pump. Napa sells a add on filter for gravity flow systems, it is much bigger and solves the problem. JimN

Any idea what the napa part number might be for the filter?

99% of the time in line fuel filters cause more problems then they are worth. Just a little story for you that happened last year. A guy up the road called me and said his tractor would not run right and would I come look at it for him. Well he had a filter in line with the sediment bowl. I pulled the filter off and blew threw it and found it to be resticted and threw in my tool box and put on a line with out that filter. His tractor has run good ever since. He gave me a case of beer for fixing that problem but he could have saved the $15 if he had only done that him self. So throw it away the sediment bowl filter has worked just fine for 50 years so why change the system now??

try a 3031 or 3032 filter from napa, i think 3031 is for 5-16 lines, 3032 is for 3/8 fuel lines. they are full flow filters that work good with a gravity feed system

Agreed, get rid of that in-line filter.

This makes 3 times so far, but yes, get rid of the in line filter, they just are not compatible with gravity flow.

When you rebuilt the carb, did you have the inlet fitting out? There is a screen in there. Does the gas flow freely with the line off the carb?

Quote: "There is some crap coming out of the gas tank, which I am trying to catch in the sediment bowl and the inline filter."

There's your problem right there. This is a gravity feed fuel system, and overall, gravity-feed systems do best with all the original fittings in good, clean shape.

If you have crap coming out of the tank, or anywhere else in the fuel system, you can't be sure of a good running tractor until you get rid of it.

This is especially true of the "crap" is rust from the inside of the tank, and exponentially true if such a hypothetically rusty-tanked tractor is kept outside.

Have the tank professionally cleaned and/or treated, or replace it with one known to be good.
