Well a few weeks ago my F-12 was starting fairly easy by the hand crank. Than two weeks ago it would pop and stutter but wouldnt keep going worth squat. Than we tred to pull start it and eventually it got to the point where the engine would keep running as long the tractor was still being towed, as soon as i pushed in the clutch the engine would quit due to lack of gas getting into the carb.

So the next step was to take the carb off and go through it with my instructor. Needless to say all the little screws and everything came out so we could check the passages, and almost all of them were plugged up. We got that all back to gether and put it back on. Well now it still wont start. At the end of last week it would pop and stutter when we cranked but wouldn't keep going. Today it wouldnt even pop, when we were cranking it or pulling it around.

Tomorrow is the last chance before i tear about the carb again. We are going to try start using a flat belt driven by another tractor in the shop. This thing has me and my instructor both up the wall. Neither of us can figure it out. It has spark, air and gas. Also it has been timed, re-timed and re-re-timed. And it is a nice hot spark that is white and blue in color.

Anyone got any suggestions.

Sorry about the long post just had to let off some steam.

Its not the fuel pump either. I rebuilt that a couple months ago and put a pressure gauge on it and got about 4psi on the gauge. than i took the gauge off and turned it over and gas came squirting out the line that connects to the carb.
Thats what my instructor thought it was than when i told him the fuel pump worked he was like "What are trying to do to me? I cant think of any other reasons why it wont work."

What about the magnet on the mag? Will it hold itself to the frame rail?

J.J. check your fuel pump. A problem with the fuel pump will kill a F-12 as quick as anything. I used to unhook the fuel line going to the carb and crank her over. You should get a healthy squirt with every revolution of the engine. Leave the ignition off because if it accidently starts you will get lots of gasoline before you can shut her off. Next thing is to get a oil squirt can with a little gasoline in it. Give the carb a shot of starting fluid and if it starts give the carb small squirts of gas. If it will run this way you have eliminated ignition problems. Be careful, don't burn your tractor or shop up. ken

I'd "borrow" a new carburetor from the parts house and try it out to see if that was is problem. Buy it slap it on and see if it runs. Return it afterwards and go through the old carb again just to be sure you didn't miss something.

not a good idea 99% of parts stores have a strict rule on that. once gas hits the carb or you tighten down the mounting bolts, its yours, period, if you buy a new carb, just use it and save your old one to rebuild for a spare, or you might be able to sell that one and get some of your money back on the one you bought

You find a source for new (not rebuilt, but NOS) carbs for F12's, I'll whip out my credit card so fast I'll get wallet burn...

Exactly. I imagine that F-12/14 carb production stopped about 50 years ago. I have a couple that I am going to rebuild, but used carbs that are rebuildable are getting hard to find.

Use a temporary gas tank with clean gas. Once you have your carb thing fixed make sure your tractor tank has been cleaned maybe lined beofre hooking up. I have a few McCormicks and all the numbered Farmalls pre 1939 and the little !@#$%^ F-12's are by far the most hard to dial in. I'd say have patience but its hard sometimes with F-12's.
