Solution for a sticky starter...

My 400 starts easy enough, but I have noticed that the bendix has a tendency to want to stay engaged on the starter. I need this fixed as I don"t want to have to replace the ring gear any time soon. What do I need to use to lubricate this (hard grease, WD 40, etc.)? What is the proper way to lubricate this starter so it will prevent sticking in the future?

Spray some GIBBS in there, that stuff won"t dry out, we find thats the best stuff since sliced bread!

Hi Jesse...Not sure if a 400 uses the same starter bendix as a Super A, but I bought the new tpye bendix from my IH/case dealer. The part # was CAS 77695H. Cost $66.94 and it has worked well for me for about 1 year now. Pete

I was having the same thing. I had some old spray lithium greese laying around. Sprayed it 2 yrs ago in mid summer, haven't had it bind up again since. Mike

I agree with Janicholson, hard grease may cause headaches in extreme cold weather and WD40 shouldn't be used on anything, its one of the poorest lubricating devices on the market, it will dry out within days and you are right back where to started. Use a light oil like "3 in 1", but a relacement bendix is likely the answer.

There is a new drive/bendix available from CaseIH that actually cures the problem, I recommend that as a permanent fix. JimN

Thanks for the info. I will look into it. I don't suppose you would have a part number handy or is this something the parts guy should know at the counter? I want to make sure I get the right part and not some cheap after-market crap.

The correct item is described as: Clutch style Starter drive, replacing the older inertia drive. I do not live near my tractors, sorry. JimN
