A while back, I posted something here about my SM always showing a hard charge on the ammeter. I checked the batt, the system for shorts, and got a new 10si alt (12v conv)...still showed a steady charge. On a whim, I thought maybe the ignition coil was loading down the elect system while the tractor was running. So, got a new 12v coil, put it on, and she missed like hell. Frustrated, I put the old coil back on...she runs great and the charging problem is gone. Any thoughts about what around the dist/coil was loading down the alt.?????

Thanks...and don't eat too many chocolate bunnies!!

When I converted to 12 volt, I was told to take the ammeter out and put in a volt meter.

If both are used a clear picture is available. If only one, I would prefer a volt meter But they only change a little between good charging, and over charging, or not charging at all so more vigilence is needed when keeping tabs on the system. JimN

Several possibilities:

1 - The ammeter was wired wrong. In the process of messing with the coil wiring you inadvertantly corrected the wiring error.

2 - There had been an open circuit to the alternator #2 (voltage sense) aux terminal. Again while working with the coil wiring it's now properly connected.

3 - If you've still got the original 20-0-20 ammeter and the battery was partially discharged briefly, the pegged ammeter merely is indicating the battery is being being charged as it should. (A 10SI can throw 50 amps or more into a low battery - that'll peg a 20 amp ammeter HARD!)

4 - (Long shot...) a current-carrying wire inside the ammeter box ran had been routed close to the ammeter case - which will mess the ammeter reading.

Suggestion: Use a good DC voltmeter and take a reading across the battery posts after the engine has run a couple minutes. The voltmeter should indicate in the range of about 13.8 and 14.5 volts. Higher that 14.5 volts says the battery is being overcharged.

The best guess I can tender is a partial short which was "cured" by wiggling wires. I would give them all a look over for rubbed spots to prevent possible fires, (see georgeky above) JimN
