A couple of days ago i called the guy with the SMTA diesel that i bought and asked him if it would be ok to come get it this weekend because the ground was frozen or else i would have had to wait until it dried out by his place. When i was there put money down to hold it he said that i would be able to drive it up on the trailer. So today when i got there he didnt have it running and i wasnt to happy about it so after a while of arguing he decided to come down to $2500 and he would guarantee me that it would run. So i got it home drained the diesel and gas cleaned carb and put clean gas and diesel back in. Then i drained the oil and put some fresh in. I tried to start it but i am not sure which way the lever should go. Does anybody know which way the lever is sopposed to be pointed? I think that is it forward for gas and back for diesel. So then i tried to start it each way, it wouldnt pop so i checked spark and there was none. I took the cap off and it needs new points and condencer but by then the stores were closed. So i cleaned the diesel fuel jar opened up both canesters one didn't have a fuel filter in it. Then i put it all back to gether and opened up the bleeders at the tops and only one has diesel comeing out of it and that is the one closest to the front end with a filter in it. The other back toward the rear end that didnt have a filter in it didnt have any comming out the top. There is some diesel going into it but not much. Whats the problem? Do i need the filter in there? What way is the lever sopposed to be pointed?

Thanks
-IHC

Open the gasoline tap on the bottom of the carb, then try the decompression lever forward and gas should run out; this will be the gas position. If gas does not run out in either position you have some thing else stuck, between the lever, and the butterfly on the right side behind the carb, make sure everything is moving throughout its stroke when you move the lever to its extremes...Darald

I am assuming the lever must work backwards to my 400 and 450. The gas is to the rear on those.

The handle should be in the rear position to start on gas. After running on gas for a minute or two puch it forward to swutch to diesel. You will need that manual mentioned in previous post. It will have all the bleeding procedures in it. Which it will need if you have opened any fuel line or filter case.

It has about 35 years since I have driven a M diesel tractor but if I remember right the decompression lever on the left goes forward to start and the throttle lever on the steering post goes down to shut off the diesel fuel. Dave

Let me be the first to say, hop on over to binderbooks dot com and order a manual. The manual is sure to have starting instructions and instructions on bleeding the fuel system.

Sorry I can't be of any more help than that, never had a gas start diesel.

I'd certainly start by getting a copy of the owner's manual and reading the correct procedure for starting it. Your Case dealer can almsot certainly help you, or you can probably find a reprint on line.

Then I'd get a shop manual for the correct procedures to R and R everything. My IT manual, IH-8, has all the dope on MDTA tractors in it.

I have no doubt there are others on these boards with the experience necessary to guide you through starting this tractor. But you will GREATLY decrease your frustration factor if you read all the necessary information yourself.

And in the name of sanity, how could one expect to operate such an exotic, complex, and unusual machine without becoming completely familiar with ALL the correct procedures first? How can one be sure one won't scew up something expensive and hard to find? For example, did you know there are two sets of valves, starting and running valves?

I know I'D like to read the owner's manual, just out of curiousity!

For what it's worth, I'm afraid it bodes ill that there is a filter missing. Almost certainly, someone was messing with this tractor and noticed the same thing you did about the fuel flow. They then removed the filter, hoping this was the problem. It wasn't.

Foreign matter probably has the fuel system plugged somewhere between the tank and the filter assembly. It shouldn't be that hard to fix that particular problem.

One word of caution; don't pull the injection pump unless/until you are familiar with the theory of Diesel operation. The odds of getting the timing right upon re-installation are not good without proper understanding of how Diesels operate.
