Could it be as simple as bleeding the fuel system?

The info below is good, I'll add that if you are getting white Diesel fumes out of the exhaust when switching over, it is more likely the compression release valves or valve train. If no smoke other than the gasoline residual, It is likely a stuck plunger in the injector pump. Cleaning it up by taking it apart is easy if you are not at all forceful, use lighert fluid to loosen varnished up old diesel, and stay very clean. A book is pretty much a necessity if you are new at diesel pumps. I think there are Blue Ribbon service manuals on the pumps for your tractor. JimN

Is there fuel at the bleeders on the injectors? With it running on gas, open the throttle just a bit and crack the bleeders open on the injectors- should be fuel there. If not, it's quite possible after sitting for a few years that the plunger in the pump's stuck. The guage I think only shows the pressure from the transfer pump. If the plunger's stuck, there should be guys on here that can explain in detail how to free it up. Good luck!

Some times valves to gas ignition chamber stuck if shutdown drill isn't followed- valves left open after shutoff overheat, get stuck open, won't close for diesel mode. Take off valve cover to see if all valves closed. RN

most of the time it's the "flipper thingy".
Part of the switch over linkage, in behind the Carb and manifold, it closes the valves to the upper chambers. If it doesn't close the valves it wont run on diesel. To check you can pull the spark plugs, put lever in "Diesel" mode and crank it over. If it blows air out the plug holes, the valves are still open. Sometimes you can just tap on the linkage to get them to close.
