I have a 1945 A which smokes blue while idiling. Just wondering if I can get by with just new rings or not. This tractor runs very good and has lots of power. Also how can I tell if this tractor has a pressurized cooling system. Can a water pump be added to these.
Thanks

Smoke at Idle may be valve guides. If you idle down a hill in high gear, does it smoke even more? If so it could use guides. I like Perfect Circle valve seals. They regulate stem oil consumption and do not require pulling the head to install, and modest in cost and time.

If the cap is held on with the groves on the outside of the neck it is a Pressure system (4-6# cap). If the cap is fastened into grooves on the inside of the neck it is atmospheric. (that cap looks a lot like the gas cap. A water pump can be added with some mods to the drive belts, however the thermosiphon system works very well if the block and radiator are nice and clean. If they are filled with rusty deposits, the pump will only mask the issue. Flush and clean the system first to get a handle on the condition of the deposits.
Good luck, JimN

Try little MMO or ATF in cylinders. Leave couple days. Maybe rings are stuck. Second thing if that don't help, try heavier oil, like 30w. Mine is not pressurized-are you overheating or what? Have heard some A's had waterpumps. Make sure belt is tight and coolant is at least half water. Some people say straight water for max cooling in summer.
