I bought a W-6 recently that had sat some time without running. Oddly, the rocker arms on the #4 cylinder were broken off. I put used ones on and got the tractor runing. When I went to reset the valves, these arms were bent so i put another set on and ran it some more. After running it a while the valves stopped working correctly and when i took the cover off the rocker arms were again almost broken off at that cylinder. I then pulled off the cam shaft cover and the belly pan. The push rod, cam shaft, and lifters all appear normal. What is going wrong here. P.S. I also had the valves reground so there sould be no problems there. Thanks for your help.

Had that trouble once with a truck engine. I had put the keepers in the wrong groove in the valves, and the springs were bottoming out.
Very embarrassing.
Hope you find the problem
God Bless,
R

Did you check the valve guide height? Maybe the valve spring retainer is hitting the guide? Is the valve spring height correct? Does it have the correct springs? If the valve springs are completely compressed when open it will break something.

When you had the valves ground, did the shop install new valve guides at the same time? If so, those new guides might not have been reamed to the correct size, and when the engine gets good and warmed up, the valve stems will expand and get tight in the guides, causing the valves to stick. Once the engine has cooled down a bit, everything will loosen up and appear to be just fine again.

check the push rods to see if someone put the wrong length in.

lifters are probably shot and are lifting the rods to high and breaking.. If its been a long time of running, put a quart of diesel fuel in the oil for a little while and see if they work loose or just change them out.
