Ok I am in need of some help. I have a zenith carb on my 1945 A. when I got the tractor I got it running and have had the same problem since day one of getting it running. When you throatal it up it hesitates and sputters then fianly gets up to speed. Its like it is starving for fuel. I did change the plugs and wires and still need to get a new dist. cap I did gap the points to .013 becasue its a mag. It just acts like it is starving for gas. Now I know I didn't help matters that when I took it apart I put it in the bead blaster at work after tearing it completly apart. I know lots of people frown on it but I have had good luck in the past but they were on good running carbs in the first place. Well it looks new and I have a good clear coat on it so it wont tarnish up. anyway what do I need to look at? It still starves for gas and I can not get it to idle any different when I screw in the idle mixture screw. Just like on all my cubs 99% of the time that screw doesn't work. Only 1 or 2 times out of pure luck I have got the carb right and that works. I tired putting a fine wire through the passeges of the carb but could only go so far. What should I do? Also new gas and sediment bulb assembly on the tractor so that isn't a problem. I also cleaned the screen on the inlet of the carb. anyone have suggestions?

Having cleaned a couple hundred carbs, I know that if you cannot get a fine copper wire through the idle passages you have more work to do!! The idle air screw WILL CHANGE the mixture when the passage is clean.
Trace the flow of fuel through the carb and blow compressed air both ways and then use a can of compressed carb or brake cleaner to verify the flow of liquid through the passages.
I use a glass bead blaster on the carbs I rebuild with no problems.
Good luck.

Wayne what size wire??? when you say clean out with the wire I tried this but the wire always dead ends. Are you pushing the wire clean through and then pulling it through? If you are doing this I am way in trouble or the wire I was using was to stiff and I could not push it through and around the passeges.

Don't rule out a weak ignition coil, but more likely, you have some vacuum leaks. Check the carb to manifold gasket, and also the manifold to engine gaskets.

Chadd, I have a 44 A with same carb and same problem. When a load first hits it, (or when throttle is first opened), it stumbles and stutters then seems to catch and run ok. Once the load is taken then it runs with a small bit of black smoke. The service manual in the Zenith section talks of an air bleed enrichment tube that is supposed to compensate the mixture under part load. My carb was pretty gunked up too but I just soaked it in carb cleaner for a week and it still has the problem. My floats measured what yours are set for and I didn't adjust them. My idle mixture doesn't do much either and only if the throttle is on the stop screw and engine is at 5-600 rpm or less. I hope someone has an explanation that doesn't need a new carb.

Roger
I am going to look at my dads Carb on his 1940 A. I am sure it is the same carb and his runs excelent! I think I will try and take his off and put it on my tractor and see if it is the carb!

Well it is definatly the Carb. I stopped to my dads and he swapped out the carbs already. 100% improvement. It had a little hessitation but I know that is from the plugs and stuff.
so now back to page one and trying to figure out what is plugged in the carb.
Chad.

When I had the carb apart I set the float hieght to 1-5/32" with gasket in place. Yes I did take and clean about 1-1/2" of totaly crude out of the air cleaner and replaced with good oil.

I figured I had a plugged passage becasue the idle circut screw doesn't do a damn thing.

Is the float good and more importantly is it set at the correct height ???? Is the air cleaner open and clear, does it have the proper amount of oil in the oil bath ????? ??

Just some random thoughts.

Mike
