When I had first gotten my M running it would surge past half throttle and we could never figure out why because we had set and reset the governor 5 times. It continued to surge through the winter and this past Saturday it finally cleared up completely. I had taken Andrew Z's advice of putting a good load on the engine. Every time I had it out I would go home and then drive it up the road in 5th gear and really lug it. After about a month or two of doing that it cleared right up. Now I can open her right up and she runs real smooth.

Mike, the problem in the first place was that it surged anywhere past half throttle. I think that this fixed the problem because a load will allow the governor to get a workout and it works out the whole tractor.

FF, I wouldnt load it too much in road gear. From what I've heard, they just arent made for much power transfer, more for speed.
Just a thought, I want them all to last, even if they arent mine =)

Good to hear that. Thats exactly how my H was. before me the tractor had seen limited use and needed a good run not just a 20min jog around. If I can recall your M had sat for a few years soo it just needed a good work out. Keep up the Good Work.

Andrew

Several potential issues
Carbon deposits in the combustion chambers from idle low work loads, or mediocre adjustments (load burns it out)

Fuel turning to varnish and changing flow in carb passages (cleaned by fuel disolving buildup, and heat assisting the disolving action)

Sticking governor parts from sitting (heat and activity degum the components)

sticking advance curve system in dist. More wirk high RPMs, and heat over time can free them up so the advance works with engine speed.

Farmalls are like a good bull they need some appropriate activity to keep them from going flabby. JimN

Sounds like a bit of Voodoo. Can anyone explain WHY this cleared up the problem, and what the problem was in the first place?
