Low oil pressure or not?

Ever since I got my 300u, the temp gauge has never moved, its mostly for loader work. The oil pressure gauge was shot when I got it, it was leaking in the gauge, so I replace the gauge and the line. Today It was pretty dry, so I wanted to work up the ground for my R/C track with my new scraper. The scraper is aweome!! It's a JD cat II scraper, which I modified to fit my 300u. Works good, will be awesome when the ground is dryer. Now heres the thing, Since I was working it hard today, I finally got the temp gauage to move to appx 145 degrees. I had the throttle up quite a bit for scraping, when I idled it down to about 600rpm the oil pressure dropped to about 30psi. Now thats probably because the oil is warmer, if I rev her uop to anything over about 1100 she goes up to around 55psi to 60psi. Is this normal? I know for cars this is about normal 25-30psi for warm idling, and around 50-60 for revved up pressure, but not sure about tractors.

Thanks for any insight, I'm loving this tractor!!

10psi per 1000 RPM is a general rule of thumb... so any old 4-cylinder Farmall should be just fine with around 20 psi at full throttle.

The relief valve should be set for 75 psi in everything from the H through 450. Mine will peg the gauge all day long, comes down to about 60 idling when hot. That is with about 125 hours on the overhaul, though.

Your engine should be in good shape for many years. Probably want a new thermostat that's at least 180 degrees to prevent unnecessary wear from running too cold, though.

steven, i just tested the thermostat when i was trying to figure why it wasnt getting hott, it opened at about 160-170, and was full open at like 180-185. Jim has mentioned, and I tend to agree with him, that the bypass port is too big, if I had known that, I would have partiially blocked it with the gasekt a made, but I'm not taking that thing off AGAIN. i MIGHT EITHER FIND SOME LOUVERS OR ACTUALLY COVER THE RADIATOR WITH CARDBOARD OR SOMETHING. oops, caps lock.

Now one of these days ill get a wave file for you guys to hear to help me identify a noise that bothers me, i think its valve related, but not sure.

With oil pressure like that you ought to be using that tractor for many years to come. I would say that is a good sound engine and in very good condition.

Mine do exact same thing. 60-70 psi after starting, 30 or so idling when hot.

Sounds good.

thanks speed, my new oil pressure is definitly aftermarket, and the 60psi is about in the middle of the gauage, so it just looks low or odd to me, heh, anymore confirmations out there?

That's PLENTY of oil pressure! Those numbers indicate your motor is in pretty good shape in the bearing and oil pump departments.
