when running my M i noticed that when i first start it, it runs great....as time goes on it starts to miss more, run rougher, well today i went out to work with the points and let it run for about 20 minutes and it started to sputter and try to die under a load, touched the coil and it's really warm...not enough to scald me but hot none the less...is this a sign of a bad coil?

Time to check to the valve gap and maybe make some adjustments. Follow the procedure in the manual, but set the gap at .020" to .023" with the engine cold. Should be just about right when it warms up.

Coils do get warm but not so hot you can't touch them. As Bob says if its 12 volts then you may need a ballast resister or you can also buy a 12 volt coil that doesn't need the resister which since it sounds like your coil is going bad I would go with

A properly operating coil should only get slightly warm to the touch. So it could indeed be your coil is going bad.

However if your M's been converted to 12 volts, it means it needs a ballast resistor wired in series with the coil primary.

When my coil failed my 140 stated spitting and sputtering. Noticed the coil was real hot. Replaced the coil then had no problem.

Could be your problem. They're about $15 to $20.
