I am about to rewire a 454 gas. Tractor is US built with Delco alternator with external regulator. The wiring diagram(if you can call it that)shows a "Rectifier - diode" part # 548239R2 in the wiring. What is it's purpose ?

I'm not familiar with the 454. However the diode is likely there to prevent the alternator from backfeeding the ignition coil as the engine coasts down after the key is turned off.

Does the 454 dash panel have an ammeter or an alternator idiot light??

Yo Bob, Whats that part number of the incandescent idiot light you and/or the other good Bob recommends ??? As you know I'm NOT a fan of the diode UNLESS its still needed to prevent run on, but prefer at least a 10 ohm resistor or your idiot light for some degree of current limiting protection.

See you at new York Expo in July?? Looks like Im only gonna give the Wico C and X Mag Seminar this year on Friday AM, Ive given the coil ignition n charging seminars so long Ive about worn em all out lol but may give one of them?? "Schedule it they will come"

John T - Any 12 volt bulb rated around 100 - 300 ma will work. Depending on the lamp holder being used I recommend a #57 or #1815 (bayonet base) or a #168 or #194 (wedge base) bulb . All are all common automotive instrument panel/side marker bulbs available at any parts store.

Presuming I do not get called for combine duty I plan to visit the NY Expo at Canandaigua this July. I'd very like to meet you/sit in on one of your seminars!

If you want a bulb that flashes, use a 257 rather than a 57.
