The black stripe 966 had more power. Rated RPM was increased from 2400 to 2600. Had a separate Nebraska tractor test for it. Don"t know about the other 66 black stripe models.

Hi, They made both 86 and 84 series as well as 66 models with the black stripe. The way I remember it was how IH marked the Bi-centenial of this Great Nation. May GOD Bless the USA, Chuck

Sheepdog is pretty much on the spot with his assessment. The tractors were only made/sold in 1976, the last year of the '66 series.

The black strips where made the last year or so of the 66 series. They had the changes to get ready for the 86 series tractors. The early black stripes did not have alot of changes. But the last ones had different rear cast wheel hubs and a solid drawbar. Serial number plate on rear housing instead of clutch housing. It had extra mounting holes for the new cab. The 86 three point arms, no fins in the side radiator panels and other things that someone else can tell you.

I dunno,

I think it was just a marketing ploy to sell some more tractors.

Trouble is, they must not have taken into account the effect of the color black on the human psyche. Those were some ugly devils. :>)

Hey, I think those tractors look pretty sweet. I'd love to have a Black Stripe 1066. But, to each his own, I guess.
