I spent a week in ND getting ready for the spring planting and took a few pictures of our air drill and 8630, along with my Dad's 42 Farmall H and thought I would share. Dad's H

And of course, the yearly occurence of the snow after we are just about ready to go to the field (snow was just this week 3/29/7):

Hoping that I remember to take some more pictures of the equipment in action when I'm home again in a couple weeks... that is if anyone wants to see them!

Cheap 4x4 horsepower. It was a crime of opportunity...

and, what is that sitting on top of the air breather? I have never seen one like this!

and, I notice that you have the replacement fuel tank cap on it...the one that I was fussed at for taking advantage of the company :-)

Bring it and lets put some fresh red paint on it and it looks like it is ready to go on the show circuit.

I haven't had much time to work on it yet or to get it back to original...

The air cleaner cap is an oil bath air cleaner from (Dad thinks) a Ford. I call it the double-oilbath-air cleaner for extremely dusty conditions! If the first one doesn't catch the dirt, the second one will!

Fuel cap must have been on it when Dad sold it many years ago, or our relative put it on sometime in the years he had it. Who knows? I have a couple extra of those nice safety caps.

Hoping to find a better hood and grille before painting, these have been bent up, pounded out, and welded on.

The spokes in the rear wheels. Was that standard issue for that year and make tractor?

The front wheels are are different from the later model that I have also.

The rears are steel cut-offs. Late 42 probably mean shortage of rubber for the war effort - I think? So this one originally came on rear steel.

Front wheels are the optional ones that allow different tread width depending on which side of the wheel you bolt the rim and which way you turn the rim. I have mine set as narrow as possible, here is a picture of them set as wide as possible:

I did not know that you could make these fronts wider. I am going to go to the scrap pile and pull out those old rims and stuff.

You need the hubs and rims with the 3 loop holes... can't do it with the wedge-style mounts.

I'm impressed with it so far, this will be the 3rd year we run this outfit on our farm. Has about 4000 hours on a 40-series engine swap and starts, pulls, runs excellent. The Quad-Range transmission is really nice, too. And the JD dealer has been good with parts availability and help with questions about how to adjust/maintain the tractor. Just about enough good experience to turn me green!

So you don't pull that planter with the H?

I think the weight of the cart loaded with wheat and fertilizer would be enough to bend the drawbar on the H... Might be able to pull the rig across the year empty, though!

Next time I'm home I've got to park the H next to the 8630 and take a picture...
