I found this IH 300 utility tractor with a stout two stage front end loader on it. Tractor is pretty clean and looks above average condition. Paint is nice and the front tires are new. Rear tires are weather checked but tread is ok. Seat in nice. Overall it looks and runs nice. He is asking 3500 or best offer. I like the tractor. I am looking for something to plow snow and move round bales around. Can anyone tell me what woould be a steal to average to too high of a price to pay. It has a twelve volt system. there is also wheal weights in back. All info is appreciated. Thank You!

I bought my 300u with a loader about 2 years ago at a farm auction. Paid $3,500 and it included a 5' 2 point sicle mower and 2 point 7' blade. Tractor has power steering but no T/A. It was a typical farm tractor, they repaired what was necessary for what it was used for, most of the hyd cylinders leaked and I had some hydraulic problems. I believe the steering gear box on mine is one from a 340/460, heavier than original. I have spent many, many hours tinkering with it but not so much money.
I use it primarily for pulling a 7' pull behind snow thrower. I put chains on it and is does very well.
Overall, I am very happy with the tractor. It is very nimble, i.e. turns short and an excellent starting engine (it has been converted to 12v).

I read all the posts and will agree if it doesn't have power steering I would run run run away from it. Now having said that We did not have a 300 but a 330 for about twenty years. I hated the tractor, but it was a good tractor it had power steering and a loader on it. We moved proabably 5000 big round bales with it over the years some as far as a mile at a time. Never picked up one with out one on the back first, many of these bales may have weighed 800 lbs how ever many of them may have weight 1500 lbs also, they were all made with a Vermeer 605A. The problems we had with the tractor were not caused by hauling bales, but I am not saying it was good for it. We pulled a 9 ft New Holland Haybine with it, a 3 disc plow. It caught on fire once while plowing had $500 ins. on it took that to fix it. Now that is how we used it It is not a heavy enought tractor to move bales with but it will and poor people have poor ways.

You have to remember the tractor was never designed to haul 800lb bales around. If you use it to push snow and lift 300lbs it will serve you well and if you must lift heavier stuff get a newer rig and spend more money as you wouldnt take your 55 CHEVY pick-up and haul 1500lbs around verry long.

It is not that hard or expensive to take the orbital power steering parts from an old combine and bypass the mechanical parts if you are handywith hyd. Would be best if you can take the parts from the combine yourself so you know how it goes back togather. To have it done for the price quoted if it includes parts and labor is not a bad deal. Any questions E-Mail me at corn.sheller@hotmail.net Armand

We had a 300U with a loader. It came to the farm new, and left in 1975. The tractor was nearly indestructable, and had to have very little in the way of repairs. It did not have power steering, and after a day of using it for loader work, my arms would ache. The steering box and front wheel bearings were the only places we ever had trouble with it.

Well if it doesn't have power steering on it then you will have real fun turning. I have a friend that has a 300U and it doesn't have power steering and also doesn't have a loader and its a bear to steer. Add the loader and I know on his you will only go the direction the wheels are turned since I know you could turn it once you lifted the loader any

The IH utilities were all rather weak in the steering mechanism,Those that lived with loaders on were real prone to have wore out steering boxes. Parts for these are very rare or nearly impossible to find. Therefore I would take a hard look at the steering components.I have a 330,350 and 460 utilities and was fortunate to find ones that weren't used for loader tractors,I realize there are a lot of IH utility owners on this site so I probably get some flack for my opinions

I got a 300U with a loader on it. tractor was owned by a hospital for plowing snow. They must have replaced most of the steering parts or not used it much, as the steering is tight for its age. I'm not gonna argue about loaders being hard on steering parts, because simply put they are very hard on them. Without power steering they are hard as heck to turn, and that shows right there how much force is put on the steering components. I dont think It would stop me from using my loader tho. Common sense will go a long way. Keep it properly lubed (probably on a more frequent basis then what the manual says being it has a loader on it), and make sure ur moving when u try to turn the wheel will help to reduce wear, but wont eliminate it.

I have a 300U that once had a loader and you are dead on about what a loader does to the steering parts. I was able to get a new steering wheel to work on a shaft with the splines mostly gone and have made mine work but it will never see another loader as long as I own it. Other wise its a pretty good tractor.

Would you say that all the parts for this tractor are hard to find or just the steering mech? If the steering is good whats she worth in the minnesota area?

Other than the steering, it's a real nice tractor. Other repair parts are the same as other IH stuff. More or less? I found a guy on line, Roland Jackson, who does a nice power steering upgrade for the 300U. But it's $1300 bucks so I haven't done it. I might, but might not go this route on mine. Haven't made up my mind yet.
