Thanks to the suggestions in my other post, I got it to run fairly constant at idle, but now if I throttle up, it appears to get too much gas, then chokes out the engine. How do I adjust the throttle/speed change so it runs smoother at all speeds?

My Cub did that - run fine @ idle, then when you try to excelerate the governor would kick in and flood the engine. I think I just took the carb. apart and cleaned it, then that fixed it - don't remember. It might be something more serious on yours, though.

Replace the coil with a known good one.

Double check your tune up. Did you retime the engine?

Whine from front of the engine. The hydraulic pump is located on the front left side of the engine. Low on hydraulic fluid?

The fan on older Cubs requires lubrication as well as the generator.

You need to locate the source of the whine. If the fan freezes up, it takes out the radiator.

You say, it APPEARS to get too much gas. Is this based on black smoke coming out of the stack?

By the way, I read the other thread. You say there is a whine coming from near the fan belt.

On Model C and other Farmalls, the governor is located in this area. If the governor on a Cub IS located here, and you are seeing black smoke before the engine dies, I think you may have a governor problem.

I will admit that I am not all that familiar with a cub engine, but from reading your other post, it sounds like maybe the timing gears are worn and have jumped a tooth, resulting in the ignition timing and possibly the valve timing being way off. Looks it may be time to get out the shop manual and dig a little deeper.
