This topic is somewhat complex. The archives here ((search for)) ABOVE, Will have fifty posts pictures and comments. The primary reason is abusive shifting into fifth by operators that rake it past the grinding teeth (actually splines on the input shaft, and fourth fifth slider) with force. The solution may be good NOS gears, Pricy, or good used gears. The Belly pump, and top cover need to be removed but no split is needed. Shifter forks and rails as well as the tip of the shifter should be inspected as well to assure a good repair. Bending shift forks is (usually) a make shift (interesting word use) way of getting a bit more use out of it, but not too correct. JimN

I have a 44 m that did the same thing.. It didn't matter to much about being on a pull or not, it would just slip out of 5th gear..

I replaced the needle bearings between the input shaft and drive shaft.. No more problems..

A worn out main shaft front bearing is a common cause of these tractors not staying in fifth. Take the belt pulley assembly or plate off and see if there is play between the main shaft and the input shaft.

You didn't say whether it slips out" any time in 5th or does it slip out when you pull back on the throttle ? If slips only when de-accelarating, check your rear tire pressure ! If they are un-even or too low, sometimes they will jump-out of gear when slowing down ! Best of luck 'on 'er ! Jim B.

This tractor slips out of gear while under throttle or off the throttle.

You can bend the forks enough so that it will stay in fifth gear. If this does not work you will hav to take the top off anyway. You can do this down through the belt pullet hole.

The forks and rails are most likely worn out. pull the top cover off and look at the rails for wear. while your in there replace the detent balls and the springs there. Forks may need to be replaced to if they are worn to far for service. Thats where I would start.
