Let me start off saying I don't have alot of experiance with farmalls, just one F-12 about 6 years ago.
My wifes aunt has this 1954 farmall cub she uses to mow her lawn, and she asked me to look at it because she felt it was low on power. It has a 5' woods belly mower. I felt that this is a little big for a cub, given she has quite a few hills to mow up. Can a Cub handle this size mower even if the motor is in tip top shape?
I have the tractor in my shop right now, and just started to check it out. It starts and sounds real good, idles very smooth with no knocks or rattles at all. Good oil pressure also. It appears to be all original, and never apart, or painted over. It does have a little oil smoke come out of the exhaust, and with the dipstick pulled out has a little blow-by. I checked the compression and it has just a hair under 100psi on all cylinders both when checked hot and cold. My question is, does it need a rebuild, and if I do rebuild it will it handle that 5' mower any better? What compression psi does a fresh rebuilt Cub make? I just don't want to sink money into engine rebiuld to find out it makes no more power. Thanks for any info.

Sharp blades are key on any mower. Crisp cutting edges take less power to cut grass by a lot, and the plant will be happier too. Have taught all of my neighbors the benefit of sharp blades with their push mowers. They're really supprised how much more grass can be cut with lesser strain on the engine.

Compression sounds good. Rebuilt will probably get you 120 lbs. 80 lbs. is usually due for a rebuild. Clean the crankcase vent tube as suggested before, adjust the mower just a bit lower in front and most importantly check the adjustment of the valves. Has probably never been done and many will attest that proper adjustment feels like the power doubled. They don't have much HP but have loads of torque when properly adjusted and tuned.

Your blow-by problem might be caused by a blocked crankcase vent tube which runs from the crankcase to the air cleaner. Mine was blocked and cleaning solved the problem. I ran a Wood L42 on my Cub and mowed some 8 acres of very rough stuff with no power problem. I"m in East KY and you know it"s not level here either! Now have a 130 which pulls a 5" bushhog.

I put a 5 foot deck on my 154 cub. And it would not mow in 1st gear with the deck up. I talked to this older man.He bet my a box of beer that he could make it mow. He adjusted the deck so that the front is a 1/2 inch lower then the rsar.I now mow in 2nd gear in 4-6 inches of grass. works good. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the input so quick! This Cub Also has the Woods 59 mower on it. It was my feeling it was too big as I have a JD 272 6' grooming mower that I once used on a 9n ford and even with twice the HP of a Cub that was too much mower for that tractor in thick grass. I now run it wth a ford NAA with power to spare. I think I'll just give the Cub a real good tune up, and sharpen the blades and check the belts as suggested. Thanks for the input!

I will probably crank up alot of people that run woods mowers on cubs, They seem to do it and get away with it, But I have to say I have always felt that 9 3/4 belt horsepower isn't really enough to run a 5 ft mower, on anything but a manucured lawn. It doesn't sound like it needs an overhaul to me. Good even compression, minimal blowby, good oil pressure, Maybe shapen blades and check deck bearings? belts? Just my two cents worth.

Now ya got to keep in mind that they are no power house as they will only make between 9 and 12 HP with STOCk parts on a good day . And tryen to run a 5 foot mower takes all they got in first . And when they start getting a tad tired then it is more then they want on hilly ground . Now iffen ya want to breath fire into that littel 4 lunger then ya need to do a bit of tweeken . And that take a rebuild . Ya bore to the next size piston to clean up the bore and ya go to your local Case I H dealer and get the 184 Low Boy pistons and a new carb and also the 184 head . What took all that she had in first she will do in second with power to spare.

i also have a cub with a woods 59 mower. it is a big mower for that tractor. mowing in second gear is a stretch if the grass is too long. be sure the deck is adjusted properly, and you have sharp blades. also check the throttle to be sure it is opening wide. i needed to re adjust the linkages on mine and reset the governor, somebody before me played with it.
