The generator has been rebuilt with a regulator.Can the reg be used with the switch for the cutout? Where should the wire from the L term on the reg be attached to the switch.

hello,,,i live in canada,,i have a 1950s,international harvester.co model,,cub,,serial number,,,78506,, i am having a hard job wiring my magneto,,please could you help,me with a wiring diagram,,even if you have to draw it,,,where the wires go,,etc,,,i would appreciate a help,,,thanks in advance,,,it is a gas engine,and is still 6 volt,,,,or wabbit83@yahoo.com thanks,,

Bob, If you now have a full fledged sounds like a 4 terminal VR with the LOAD terminal, theres no need nor would I use any old light switch type of current regulation (if thats what youre asking) and the VR has its own internal Cutout Relay i.e. you dont use any other cutout relay or the High/Low settings on a light switch that wired to the Gennys Field terminal on a 2 wire Cutout Relay system.

If youre simply changing from a 3 terminal VR (BAT ARM FLD) to a 4 terminal VR (BAT ARM FLD LOAD) the ONLY change required is to disconnect the ammeters load side feed to the switches BAT input terminal and feed it instead from the LOAD terminal on the VR.

When you replace an old 2 wire (BAT & GEN) Cutout Relay with a 3 or 4 terminal VR (BAT ARM FLD LOAD) you no longer need any other cutout relay nor do you need the gennys Field post wired up to the light switch to provide Low or High Charge regulation.

BAT on VR to the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter.... GEN/ARM on VR to gennys ARM post. FLD on VR to Gennys Field post. LOAD on VR feeds hot battery voltage up to the lights and/or ignition switch, as their BAT terminal input voltage.

Instead of the lights n ignition being fed voltage off the ammeters Load terminal as with a 3 terminal VR or a Cutout Relay, with a 4 terminal VR having the extra 4th LOAD terminal that now serves that purpose. Simply disconnect any wires from the switches BAT input terminal over to the ammeters Load terminal and replace it with a wire up from the L terminal on the 4 terminal VR.

Clear as mud Im sure lol

John: I appreciate your reply I expect you answered the question. This is what I have the VR has 3 term out the side L-Batt-F. The F is wired to the F on the gen. The switch is the original 3 position with the resistor.
If you would setup the wiring with those 2 items.

Bob, On many of those 4 terminal VR's that have BAT FLD LOAD all together side by side, theres an ARM terminal off on one side or the bottom all by itself.

1) BAT to the load side of the ammeter, thats the other side from the one that wires down to the starter or switch/solenoid..... On a 3 terminal VR or a 2 wire Cutout Relay that load terminal on the ammeter had 2 wires, one to BAT on VR and the other fed voltage to the lights and ignition (but they are wired to L on a 4 terminal VR, see below)

2) FLD to gennys Field post

3) LOAD wires up on the dash to the BAT input terminal on the Ignition or light switches. If they currently have a wire over to the ammeters load terminal, remove it and connect instead to L on the VR

4) ARM the one often on one side or the bottom all by itself (may not even be labeled ARM?), wires to the Gennys ARM post.

DO NOT run the wire from the Gennys Field post up to the light switch. The light switch can still be used to operate the lights no problem. It still has a BAT input terminal and a Lights output terminal which wires to the lights and can still use another resistor for light dimming purposes but thats NOT the resistor that was used on the 2 wire cutout relay systems where the Gennys Field post got a resistive ground in the low charge setting.

Thanks again we are almost there. The ARM from gen is attached under the VR. I have a mag so no ign switch . I should remove the jumper from the load side of ammeter and run the L wire to where it was on the switch. Not knowing I ran L term wire to the where it was on the gen resistor, it got a little hot. Do you think I messed up anything other than the wire?
