Adjusting clutch rod on 966 with hydraulic assist

Hi guys,

I was just wondering how you adjust the length of the clutch rod on a 966 gear drive with the hydraulic assist cylinder in the center of the clutch rod. Do I loosen up the nuts on each side of the cylinder and then take the pins out of both clevises, and then adjust them both to get the appropriate length, or do I just adjust one side?

On a side note, has anyone ever heard of a new clutch that makes a clunking noise? Ever since we had a new clutch put into it, at low idle, you can hear a kind of clunking with the clutch disengaged. When you push the pedal in, the noise seems to go away. Also, when you rev up the engine, it gets louder up to about 900 rpm, and then goes away. The clutch is very grabby, but other than that seems to work okay. I figure that adjusting the clutch and T/A may clear up the grabbiness. I already have the steps that tractor vet uses to adjust them, and was just wondering about the hydraulic assist. Thanks.

I covered that awhile back as they do not adjust as you think and when ya start playen with the clutch adjustment ya have to do it all , clutch brake , T/A dump valve along with the free play. So look back in the archives and see if ya can find it . If ya can't check with me later tonight and we will go back over it in detail. I am headed out the door to the farm at this time. And i type real slow.

First off, do you think that it is worth me trying? It has not been adjusted since the new clutch was put in 4 or 5 years ago. Second, if I did it, I was going to do the works (trans brake, dump valve, etc.). Third, I have a few questions on your procedure:
Am I supposed to push the rod from the clutch bellcrank to the cylinder in while adjusting the rear rod and how much resistance is enough? Also, if it starts to push the front rod out, is that too much?
When I am adjusting the clevis on the trans brake, do I screw it 1/2 to 1 turn onto the rod, or off of the rod (clockwise or counterclockwise)
When I am adjusting the bolt for the dump valve, do I add 1 turn in or out (clockwise or counterclockwise)?
Am I supposed to put the head of the bolt between the platform and the clutch pedal, or the bolt itself?

Well now that i have had a half full day cleaning barn with the smell of manuar spilt diesel and a half gallon of gas dumped on me and a tad better then a six pack down the hatch and plum don't give a flyen you know what To the first question just shove it back and hold it then adjust the free play with the adjustment on the rear rod to the clutch pedal and set it somewhere around 5/8th to 13/16ths depending on the amount of ware and lock down , Next do the trans brake as i have said with the help of someone else and you SCREW IT OUT on the rod this is ADDING lenght to the clevis . Then on to the dump valve and you TURN IT INTO THE CLEVIS TO MAKE THE CLEVIS GO ONTO THE DUMP VALVE BOLT SO IT IS SHORTER . YEs i know this is your first time of doing this . IT ain' rocket sicense here . Sure hope you were not that nervice for your first one out on that back road .
